One of my favorite past times, rummaging in the Junk Yard. :) There is a show in NJ that is held in a junk yard called the Pumpkin Run, a slew of cars show up - it's one of my favorite show (it was last weekend). Neat Stuff.

do you still have the Judge?

  4. I agree, no problem with snakes in the wet yards as they will go away if they have an escape route and you are making noise. Spiders usually already have enough to eat. Scorpions are an Arizona phenomena and while there are some in Texas, they rarely bite and aren't serious if they do. All this changes if you are alergic of course. In the summer the problem is staying hydrated in the TX sun and heat. I have my cell phone with me out there so 911 can ping me to find my corpse just in case.....

In fact, if you are out of state just let us keep all these cars here forever; don't bother to come check them out. No, really, come down and keep these guys in business!

  5. "A little more info on this yard and answers to some of the questions...

This yard is a one-man operation run by a curmudgeon that looks like a mini Grizzly Adams. Doesn't have a shop or office. His truck is basically his office. He has owned this yard for over 30 years and doesn't keep regular hours. Catching him there is a hit or miss proposition. Thinks his parts are worth their weight in gold, although it is possible to catch him in a good mood and occasionally get a reasonable deal (rarely). "

Of course! What would anyone with any experience expect someone who owns this place to look and act like?

I have my own yard and while to do not match his description, I can relate.
It is his stuff. he owns it and he can do what he wants with it. Same goes to all of you. What you own, no matter how much, is yours to do with it what you like.

I've met and gotten a know a few guys in Az that also own their own olds style yards and you can get along with them quite well if you know what you are doing.
You do not treat them like you are in walmart or some auto zone.
Compliment them on their stuff. You know it is cool or you would not be posting it or reading it. Like someone saidm, these places are going away fast.
Another guy said "If" he dies.... I got news for you. He will die, it will happen to all of us of course. I wonder if he has kids or realtives and a will to preserve it or not? That will end it.
Usually, you can deal with these guys if you treat them right.
Whoever he is, he is not stupid. He knows what he has and he probably knows that few other people have what he has. So, it is his business what he wants to sell it for.

I just love them souther boneyards....hell any boneyards for that matter. It's funny how you guys down there are telling us to beware of the rattlers spiders etc. My sister was sationed at Fort Hood for many years, I went down there one summer to visit and decided to just cruise the country sides checking out the old stuff....ran across this guy who owned a water pumping company, who also happened to have about 150-200 cars on some property he owned. I was talking to him about some of the old rides I could see and recognised, he was a very nice guy.

When I asked him if he cared if I just walked around and checked them out he told me I could "at my own risk"!! My own risk? I asked...he just chuckled and said Yep! Why do you say that? I asked. Well, whatever happens to ya out there is not my responsability!!! I just kind of laughed back to him and said well, tell me one thing, is it legal for you to shoot me? The ol guy just started laughin and told me go ahead...check out whatever ya want to I just like to give you guys shit. Usually when I tell some guy like you that, they just say never mind and drive off!!!

I ended up making a deal with the guy and hooked up 4 buddies with some goodies he had out back. It was one of the best times I've had out there. I have not been back to his place in about 7 or 8 years, but we do talk on the phone ocassionally. I do understand where you guys are coming from, but you have to understand up here in the rusty world, we do not have much choice at all. I just figure, if someone in Texas wanted what I've gotten from down there, it would not have been in a place where I could get it!!! Just so you know, everyone of my buddies that got a ride from him, all still have them and do not plan on selling them.

That place reminds me of a junkyard a little north of Richmond Indiana I bough parts out of for many years and knew where everything was in it,about 10 years ago the owner took ill and his daughter that had power of attorney seen dollar signs and had a auction and what did not sell got crushed. About 1000 cars were in there from the late 30s up and I had to find other sources for parts after that.
