While I can appreciate the sentiment, do none of you realize that language (English more so than others?) is constantly evolving? We (most of us here) speak AMERICAN English. If we can't handle the evolution of language, why not go back to speaking UK english (Which I'm quite sure is different than it was a couple hundred years ago)? For that matter, why not go back to Latin? Aramaic anyone? Our language is comprised of bits and pieces of several different languages, from all over the world; it's constantly changing; why is this bad? For you old timers that want to bitch, the (American) English language has changed from your grand parents' generation to your parents' generation, and from your parents' generation to yours (and long before that, I'm sure), why is it not acceptable for that change to continue past your generation, you closed minded, arrogant fucks? EDIT: One more thing, considering AIN'T... If it is acceptable to have contractions for "will not", "do not", "did not", "have not", "can not", "were not", "was not", "is not", "are not", etc..., then why would a contraction for "am not" get your panties in such a bunch?
How about the most misheard lyric of all time...... Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze" "scuse me while I kiss this guy"
My first girlfriend thought Bruce Springstein was singing "Blasting till the bed drops" in his song "Workin' On The Highway"! (He really sang "Blasting through the bedrock", but I loved her for the way SHE heard it! )
Thank you Nads,C9 needs a enima post stat Why is everyone worked up over a few slang words, your acting like a bunch of tea and crumpet eatin mother fuckers.jeeez lighten up
Hotrod to Hell You know, I couldn't sleep about 4 this morning and I got up to read the HAMB to get my mind settled. Then, I come across this post. I wanted to post a lesson about sociolinguistics but who cares! I've got a BA in english humanities, but who cares? I come here to talk cars and DIY projects. Does the jargon and young punk talk bother me, sometimes- but who cares! I'm not that PC and/or sensitive. What really bugs me, however, is that people like my grandpa that can out read me, and is an old time hotrodder has stayed away from thing like this- just for the very reason of grammar police. How many talented hotrodders will not post now? Is grammar important? Yes! Everyone comes from a different level, just do the best you can....... Now, cut mine up......I really don't care, I just love the tech stuff and the information!
I agree with the grammar critique, thanks Jay. let's go in another direction, listing people in your title. Shifts, need transmission help RACEFAB, question about camshaft design Plowboy, need gay hair bands trivia info. If you only want their opinion send them a Personal Message.
So... Who's going to send this post to the OSR offices? I nominate Buick '59 for two reasons... 1- He used to work there, and 2- He sits in my hallowed former cubicle in the Death Star. Many great stories and impressive levels of flatulence were produced in that cube. How that relates to the OSR-related task...I'm not quite sure. But it should..because OSR could be cool if they tried just a tiny bit more than they currently do. ...and I feel we'd agree on how this post should be "required reading" over there. Have fun Buick '59...it was cool seeing you at MPMC ~ take care of the new mag...!
Interesting how this post turned out. A great many seemed to have missed the main thrust of what I posted. Its not about bad spelling or bad grammar or even slang. What it was about was posting a readable post. Somewhat exemplified by the three samples illustrating what to me are difficult and easy ways to create a readable post. I know I dont have the greatest grammar skills in the world and nowhere in there did I profess to have such skills. Not many people write perfect English and the great majority of those who do, are not particularly interesting to read. I see a lot of that on writing boards where a very few are so enamored of perfection in the written word they forget they are there to tell a story. If some of you will re-read the intro, Im sure youll see what I was getting at. And if you dont . . . thats ok as well. Not my problem mon....
Clearly! Don't you mean grammatical skills??? I knew what you meant C9. The grammar and spelling can be spot on, but if there isn't a paragraph break to be seen for miles, then it's just a pain in the arse to read! I don't think you're anal at all... but then, some people think I'm anal... but then I usually have a high fibre breakfast too...
If We Should Ever Battle,...The Weapon I Choose Is Grammar,...And From What I Can See,.....You have Already Been Defeated!
Steve....keep my panties out of this! I just don't like the word. Period. Also....technically speaking.... shouldn't it be amn't? But that's only if you want to go down that road......
You can all thank Jack Kerouac for the Stream of Consciousness bullshit. I hate it when someone doesn't hear you and says "Do what?" It's "What?" There's NO do!!!! grrrr.
I tell ya what Kris, I won't say "ain't" if you can eliminate "won't" from your vocabulary. Shouldn't it be "willn't"?

imagunnagitmeahotrodnpainterpurplenflameswitabigassmotorto. Just kidding.......I don't really like purple with flames.
What I usually say to people who say "do what?" to me is something along the lines of: "get down on all fours and bark like a dog" cuz after all, if they are asking for something to DO, well, I'll give it to them. So, Hollywud.... flap your arms and cluck like a chicken!
What get's me is when you misspell one word out of a hundred when you have asked a very good question or made a comment and someone gets on there and gives you shit about the spelling and they say nothing about the content. I recieved straight A's in English and grammer but some times my fingers just hit the wrong keys. Some people just need to let it go.
thank you for that post c9. people on this board are constantly miss-spelling my screen name. what's even worse, is i saw a '32 with the word duece worked into the pinstriping some years back. glad i didn't do it. if you can't remember the right way to spell it, remember that it would be pronounced "dooes-cee" when spelled incorrectly. also i have read your book and really enjoyed it. will there be another one?
