I have done some searching and not able to find much information. Can you school me on the Banjo rear end? I eventually want to use the axle tubes on a V8 quickchange. 1. What years am I looking for? 2. Do you know what the length of the axle tubes should be both left and right? This is going in a hot rod and I have heard I might need two axle tubes from one side. 3. What is the measurement of the banjo with a tape measure? cir***ference? Heading to the Big 3 here in San Diego this weekend and I want to bring one home with me. Craig
Get a 39-40 Ford rear axle and you should be fine for any hot rod 40 and under. Same axles both sides. If you are building a 41-48, get a rearend from one of those (a little wider).
The 37-41 axle housings are 27 1/2" long. The 42-48 are about 1" longer so a 2" longer rear end. Which one you want depends on the what you are building. AV8's usually use the shorter tubes. Quick changes are available for any early Ford banjo rear end 28-48. John
A quick change will require a 6 spline pinion gear. If you can find a rear end with a good 6 spline ring and pinion, you will be able use it in the quick change. 28-31 A housings won't fit a V8 QC center, so don't get one of those.
Anyway to tell from the other case the year or if it is a 6 spline? Anything on the outside of the case that let me know what the ring and pinion is? Or do I need to crack the case?
You might want to check in with the Banjo rear end social group. Lots of great info there as well as links to I'ding what is what. Torchie.
If you're planning to keep the stock keyed axles, look for housings with the best bearing surfaces you can find. Gear ratios are stamped on the rib on the bottom side of the center section, like 37-9 (4:11). Other than that, there are several differences in spring and shock mounting, look for info on banjo rears before choosing what you need.
I found a great article on the banjo group and I am going to take that with me tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.
Well, depending on how deep your pockets are you can start here with Speedway. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Winters-Championship-56-Quick-Change-Rear-End-Dual-Bolt-Pattern-Plain-/261752751272?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cf1ae04a8&vxp=mtr QC's are big money, as you probably already know. http://www.hotrodworks.com/parts-list.pdf Here's a list of vendors for Franklin quick change rear ends. http://www.franklandracing.com/dealers.aspx
Buck, the only QC I've seen lately that will bolt into a Model A banjo is the Kiwi one. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/model-a-ford-kiwi-quick-change-rear-end.777699/
