school me on sway bars (ifs 38 chevy)

ok guys, when i picked up my 38 chevy sedan it had already had a Mustang II front end in it, i went to the junkyard to see what i could come up with and looks like the mustang II stuff just wont work, so what have you guys come up with any help or direction would be appreciated

 

Try to find out what company made your front suspension and contact them.

 

Ford made it, in the 70's.. it was cut right out of a donor car

 

Sounds like you have my car, but it was in my shop last night. I have a 38 chevy with an out of the car mustang under it that I put in around 30 years ago. I am also close to were you are with it now.
I just put all new parts on it, but I need to locate the struts on the frame.

Wish I could help, but I will be watching this post.

 

Why won't the factory piece work ?
Can't it be modified ?

 

You can mount it backwards, upside down, use connectors to mount it above or below the rails - whatever. Don't be put off because it won't fit in the stock position.
That's hot rodding.

Oh yeah - just make sure the 'legs' that run near right-angles to the main cross-bar are horizontal.

Likely the problem is just attaching the sway bar..I have a Fatman IFS and their sway bar fit with hardware supplied,,another suppliers (Chassis Engineering) attaching bracket would not work at all. I called Chassis Engineering and they were good enough to tell me the vendor was misleading me as their swaybar brackets were not a bolt and go for the Fatman IFS. Look around a bit more you'll find the right fit.

 

You can get aftermarket sway bars that will work just fine. I think I bought mine from Chassis Engineering but don't remember, but there were several to choose from. They are the same width as the Mustang II bar, but without the big dip in the middle and they come with frame brackets that you can mount to just about any frame.

 

BE CAREFULL...with aftermarket bars. Some are not made with spring steel, therefore...all they are is extra front end weight and lighteners of the wallet.

Do your homework on materials and ask questions of the manufacturer. Make them tell you the material, thEn look it up. Mostly the 4xxx materials that have been heat treated are good materials.
