Just bought a used Schroder box (they're as rare as hens teeth here in the uk) but it looks like someone has done a hatchet job on it. The shaft that runs to the right has the end boss really trashed as though it's been attempted to remove with a pair of stiltsons and the shaft itself is about 3/8" out of the housing.
    Question 1
can it be removed in order to true the boss up on a lath and get rid of all the trashed sections
Q 2 is it detrimental to have the shaft 3/8" out of the centre housing
Q 3 does anything actually run inside this shaft or is it just for mounting the steering box.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

20200930_162238.jpg Looking at this piss poor picture, notice the left side has the steering shaft just visible. That shaft has a shoulder for locating on the support bearing at the end of housing. The right side tube is hollow and you could cut it off if so inclined right up to the casting. There's nothing inside of it.

Post a picture of yours, someone will advise...

Thanks I was just a bit concerned that the right hand tube is structural IMG_3223.JPG IMG_3224.JPG

It is structural in that it's one of the mounting points for a Schroeder box. To keep it from spinning on that end and the other when installed, Schroeder supplies a bearing block that fits on the steering column that gets braced to some structure like a cowl support hoop in a center steer race car.

Alternatively you can make some sort of bracket that attaches to the bolts that hold the box together, and again fastens to something to keep it from spinning.

I'd be a little concerned about the tube being slightly pulled out of the housing. However it only looks like it's out a small amount of the total insertion depth. I don't know how deep overall that tube fits into the casting. Ididit bought Schroeder out and makes them now. I'd suggest emailing them and asking for information. Ididit is on the web, and I'm a computer illiterate otherwise I'd put a link in. Still haven't learned how to do that...

It's likely not pulled out, just over-machined.

The last track-T that I built had about the same amount of exposed machined area.

While the manufacturer is no longer making these, they are still in business, and still provide support, although acquired by Ididit.

We had a small issue with the box on the aforementioned track-T, and a telephone call resolved it.[/QUOTE]

This is one of the very last, if not the last one Gary built. He sent it to me long on one side and empty. I trimmed it to length, mounted it, and sent it back for final ***embly. Notice no machining line on the right hand side. IMG_6482.JPG IMG_6488.JPG IMG_7091.JPG IMG_7092.JPG

I was wondering when the “sky is falling “ thread would be mentioned.
