Technical Scintilla Vertex Magneto on a Model A engine

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by De Konjel, Aug 1, 2023.

  1. Are there people here with info regarding this Scintilla Vertex Magneto. It's for a Ford Model A engine and it works. That's all I know. Would like to know how it works and how old it is. Think it's pre-war. Any info on parts and maintenance is appreciated. Not much to be found on the WWW!!
What sparkplugs do I need? What gap for the electrode? Different timing?

It appears that the tag is stamped 0° over 700 and 6° over 1000, I believe that means your mechanical advance starts at 700 rpm and will be all in at 1000 rpm. The total advance could be increased by cranking in more initial advance. Spark plug selection will be dependant on a number of factors but I'd start with thre standard Model A heat range unless you have dramatically increased the compression ratio.

George Riley had one in the original sales literature for his Overheads, so they were used pre WWII.
