OK, I have a muncie 4 speed I took out of my 56 chevy belair. Got tired of setting in Branson Mo. traffic with a clutch. The guy that built the car can't remember which tranny it is, the motor is a 396 out of a 68 chevelle. The case # is 3885010. I've seen some 21's with that # and some 22's with it (in my search) how can I tell what I have?
One ring on the input shaft meant 2.20 low close ratio and two rings meants 2.52 wide ratio. The case could have either gearset 'cause who knows who put what inside. Studs on the shift levers vs. bolts on newest models etc. Older units have 10 spline input and the splines are 26 splines in the last ones produced. Unlikely you have a M-22 unless you can check the helix angle of the gears. M-22 was only close ratio and could have either spline input shaft. I've got probaby enough spare parts to put together 3 muncies laying around. So what's in a casting number? Try http://www.5speeds.com/muncie2.htm
