Had a motorhome, traded it for a decent 1987 GMC pickup, drove it for a while, put it up for sale or trade, traded for a 1980 Camaro with a hopped up 1992 350ci, just today traded for a 1961 Pontiac convertible with a 389 project. It needs interior and top, and some trunk rust repair. Did they have 389s in 61, that's what he said was in it? It's a barn find here in Florida, and has 1996 California tags on it, woo hoo let the fun begin.

Crap. my dumbass didn't take a phonecam pic. How about they have some late 60 Moper convertiblas as well, a 67-69 cuda conv, and coupe, and a Dart V8 conv, I'm thinking I can help them sell them on Fleabay.

Pic is not the car, it needs paint, interior and top. I always liked this body style, seems like you don't see too many of them..

Yes, 389 was the base engine, and the 421 was available as an upgrade.

  10. Big time score....389, 3X2's, 4 speed, great car, great options. My brother in law bought a 61 2 door hard top back in 61, it was a fast car right out of the factory. This car one of the pretties Pontiacs I've ever seen.

Great score. If you find it has a real 61 421 in it I would go out and buy lotto tickets....almost none were made at the end of the model year and I believe only in "select" cars...if you were "connected".

  16. Yep had the 389 and the 421 was the upgrade, but you could get a hopped up 389 as I recall like a 3x2 motor.

I would think that a '61 poncho 389 even if it was a catalina sedan would be a major upgrade from an '80 camaro. As a mater of fact I cannot even believe that anyone would ever admit to owning a camaro, '80 or otherwise. ;)

  18. Funny how trading works, you did good for sure.

  19. I'll bet the fellas in the Camaro club are calling him a trader [sic] today for damned sure. ;)

Love those old Ponchos. We used to rank them by how many preople would fit in the trunk. My cousin in law when we were in highschool had a 4 person trunk 6 if you stacked 'em right.

Pretty damned good information when you were headed to the drive in on Friday night.

I had the chance to get one cheap about 15 years ago but the front fenders were junk and could not find a good set so I passed, this was in the days before computers and now kicking myself in the ass for passing it up.

OK, here are the real pictures, it doesn't have the 8 lug rims, but still a sweet looking car, I need to put a top, interior and rear trunk floor in, gonna try to fire up the 389 as it is, maybe get it on the road hillbilly style YEE-HAW.How about it has white plate California tags from 1996 and title. I may need a right rear tail fin chrome and rear bumper, who has parts? It has some bondo in that area.

There might be one in a local old junkyard and will check the next time I am there, there is a early 60s Pontiac convertible that has rotted in half but not sure of the year.

If you get a chance and it's a 61, rear bumper, and front driver's side stainless trim/eyebrow that's on the hood, I think those are the hard to find parts I need.

Congrats! And may the trunk & quarter panel gap boogers be relatively untoxic as you make her shine again.

  26. Bumper and hood trim can come from any '61, taillights are model-specific.

Check the frame for rot in the rear - both the last 3 feet of the rails, and in and just around where the lower trailing arms mount. Around here those cars got parked for one of two reasons - the frame rotted out or the Slim-Jim trans died. I had a '64 Gran Prix here that had all the floors in it and the body did not seem too bad in - but the frame was rotted clean through on the left side under the rear seat. Eventually I parted it out.

If the trans is shot you're going to have it rough. I wouldn't fix it, I would either put in a dual-coupling Hydramatic (bolt in), or you have the option of either spending the money on an adapter to use a TH350/400/700R4, or just buying a later Pontiac motor and trans which will bolt right up to the front mounts.

  27. Oh the first pic was a " it could be pic" and not reality.
That sort of changes things doesn't it ?

Almost like saying your old lady "could" look like Jennifer Lopez.

Yes you did score. In these days you just about have to pay someone to take a motor home. Trade one for anything can be a good deal ???

  30. Welllll I didn't mean you. ;)

Actually I would consider one if I could own a second gen. But for some reason they just do not exist.
