I love craigslist. I've got to give my buddy, "Matt with the Beard" props for the heads up. Check it out. Story is it came out of a 33 ford 3 window around Janseville Wisconsin sometime in the late 60's. He supposedly built the thing in 52 or 53(maybe you guys can help me verify it by the speed equipment on it) The guy switched it out for a small block, and sold the car, and the motor just sat around. I dont really know what I'm going to do with it... but it seems like it'll probably find its place. Old hot rod parts are the coolest. Does the 52-53 build sound plausible? The valve covers have fenton cast inside of them. Has an Edmunds 2x2 with those rad air cleaners. Dual point conversion in the distributor, and howard adjustible rocker arms. It's supposed to have a 3/4 race cam in it too. Anyone ever seen one of these coils before?
Awesome Johnny! I sust scored a 303 myself but it's not out of an old Hot Rod though. The engine looks pretty authentic for the period so I would same it's true. Congrats!
Definately early '50s speed stuff....rare, rare, rare!!! And it's got to have a non-stock cam in it if somebody went to the trouble of putting adjustable rockers on it. The Hydro is probably stock
Did you steal a shopping cart and cut off the basket to haul that monster around??? Now thats the coolest engine cart!!!! Enjoy the African Buffett!!!! Your best friend. Jack
With the generator mounted on the intake its probably 49 to 52? as I think the generators were mounted on the p*** exhaust manifold in 53,the carbs are 49 or 50 but if its a 303 it can be from 49 to 53 since the first 324 was in 54.
I ran a '50 303 in my '38 Ford in '61. That speed equipment would have been vintage then! It all appears to have been a package for a long time. I think you were told the truth, at least some of it!
That engine is super cool. I talked to the guy but it was out of my budget. Since there were no pics on the ads, I asked him if it was a runner. He told me that he would "warranty" the engine. Seemed a bit over the top for a motor that has not been run in 30 years, but he sure was confident in it. Nice score!
He told me the same thing. I dont know how he could be so confident without ever pulling the heads. I got him to come down pretty far on the price though. I'm thinking about calling him on that warranty... the valley sure is clean though... I've got it soaking now... I really want to get it turning, just so I can pull the ****** and get it up on an engine stand.
