This could have been avoided if I hadnt read the post on junkyard engine tips, thanks guys you inspired me. What I bought from the lady down the street is an 83 Pontiac Parisiene, same as Impala, 4brl sbc, overdrive auto, 10-bolt rear.It had been hit on the pass side and has 47k showin. 100 bucks. Been sittin about 7yrs. Stuck in a battery, checked the fluids, aired the tires, fired it up and drove it home. Question is: what have I got? Q-jet with lottsa wires commin out of it, some electronic sensors in exhaust manifold, HEI dist. Is it a 350? Is it a 305? I thought most 305's came with a 2 brl. What can I use? I figure the carb is out and probly the intake. How about the dist? Any trick to usein the OD trans? The engine and trans are goin in a T-bucket I picked up awhile back. Its a Speedway kit. I want to run 55 F100 front brakes and 51 Merc(Dana 44) rear with 4.11 gears. Would the OD trans make this livable? Dave
You have a "feedback" style Quadrajet carb there. You'll need to toss it and the distributor into the garbage! Get an earlier non-feedback carb (pre-1980 or so) and an HEI or points distributor from prior to the feedback era as well. The overdrive******* will work fine so long as the TV or "kickdown" cable is retained and adjusted properly. 305 engines came with four barrel carbs. Look at the emissions sticker on the radiator support. It will say 5.0 or 5.7 litre. Odds are, it's a 305 (5.0) engine in that year and model. Congrats on your score...rip off all the smog stuff, squirt some degreser on that motor and*******, and bolt on some swap meet speed parts! Low-buck power for your project...and you'll use lots of little parts from the car to complete it! Then, sell off what you DON'T need!
Parisienne? the old girl musta drove that down from Canada as a winter car. If it says 5.7 liter it's a 350, 5.0 is a 305. Tag should be on the rad shroud with the belt instructions. I know 81-2's had four barrel 305's.
Thanks Fat Hack. The HEI is really an engine pre oiler in disguise! The "feedback" Q-jet a door stop! Anybody need some rust free sheet metal for CHEAP?
If you are going to keep that engine with the*******, there shouldn't be any problems, but I've always heard that the 700R4s made before 1987 were just really big doorstops. I've heard there is nothing that you can do with them to make them strong. Check Fat Hack's post about the 305, it is very informative.
Good Score!!! "What the other guys said" about the carb. The only way that carb could be worse is if there were two of them. It is probably going to be a 305 engine. That is not a bad thing. It is pretty easy to get 250 hp out of a 305 with bolt on's. There should be anice tilt column in that car as well. Justice
Yup its a 305. What were the trannie options and how do I tell them apart? Could it be a 200r? The T is light. It wont take much HP to move it along. What kind of RPM's can I expect at highway speeds with the OD-4.11-29" tire?
