Hot Rods Scored an 'A' Roadster project - Time to build a Hot Rod!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Malcolm, Oct 27, 2008.

  1. Might consider bigger tires, the ride looks like it might be a bit rough.

    Great project Ni—Malc—um... Nickolm—Mick—Malck—uhhh... dude. :D

  2. Here's a pic of my 31's rear trunk area showing the upturn in the floor.

Looks to be much the same as your 29.

This will give you a idea of how far forward the seat goes.

    I'm 6' tall and have a 32" inseam.
Along with that, the car has a 4" firewall recess.
Plenty of legroom and the same was true of my pals SBC powered 29.

Shown here, a little more of the trunk and floor.

Congrats on finding what looks to be a pretty good 29.
    Cool steering handle.

The 29s on 32 rails are the best looking roadster there is imo.
A little more work than a 32 or 31 on 32 rails, but well worth the effort.

I believe there's a thread kicking around on the HAMB about A's on 32 frames.
Find it and take a look.

29 roadsters on A rails can look pretty good too.

Nice score Malcom. I've always liked model A roadsters....especially 28-29's. Sounds like you've got a plan...keep us posted.

  5. I'm sure you got a better deal than the one I saw at a show in Dawsonville,GA his Saturday. Pretty solid original "as found" condition, but I thought the $8700 price a bit high.

I hate to get into 'I know more than you' mode, but '28 roadsters had no door handles. Henry put 'em on the '29's starting in October 1928 according to the MARC/MAFCA Judging Standards and Restoration Guidelines. Hope this helps.

  11. Are the F100 brake drums 11"?

    Reason I ask is, I just bought a pair for a 62 F-100.

These are for 11" brakes 1 3/4" wide and look exactly like the ones pictured above.

My problem was that I have a narrowed nine inch rear axle from a 62 F100, but the alloy axles have the passenger car 4 1/2" bolt pattern.

What I understand works with this combo is the 57 Ford passenger car brake drum.
    They're fairly expensive new.
$120. rings a bell, but I'm not sure if that's individually or per pair.

Mine were $40. each - discounted a bit.

They have a 2.885 register hole which required boring out about .010 for the alloy axles.
As well as drilling for the 4 1/2" passenger car pattern.

I have a drill jig I made using a dividing head, but you could do them at home.

All you'd need would be a spare axle you could turn into a drill jig by cutting it down to a very short length or just pop the studs out of the stock length axle, set the axle flange on a couple wood blocks to get it up off the floor and use a transfer punch to mark the holes.

Would probably be a good idea to mark and drill the first hole, install bolt and nut so there's no shifting, do the same with the 2nd hole, bolt and nut that then the remainder could be marked and drilled.

good catch, Nick. I'm impressed that you didn't go SBC. Course, you are a Ford guy. Me, early Oldsmobile. But to each his own. I have some idears that might help with the driveline, so PM me if you need my $.02. Otherwise, have fun & good luck.

Well, me being a Ford guy, that's all that will go between the rails. There's nothing wrong with a Y-block! :D I got a good deal on the one that I have, plus they are still fairly plentiful if I have (major) problems with it. A flathead isn't within my budget and I won't run a banger (tractor :D;)) engine. This hot rod has to have a V-8!

    Thanks for the info!

Believe it, or not, the banger was already spoken for before I even picked the car up! A friend that works at Speedway will be getting it...

Thanks again, Joe! That wind WAS brutal yesterday! I'm sure glad Gary was driving :)

Haha... 'let the beatings begin'!:D You two kill me - I have no chance at all!

Oh, yeah it'd be awesome to have Gary's roadster!... I'm only about $30k short, though :)

    Don't worry, not a chance I'll be swayed! :D

Haha... don't need no stinkin' tires! :D Thanks again for hauling it, Gary!

Well, that would be awesome... not out of the question, but a probably a bit of a stretch. I will be there no matter what - probably in my Galaxie!

Jay, thanks for all of the great info!! I'm sure I'll have questions for you, as I progress. I love the Tardel/Bishop roadster above and that was the first book I bought to read up for this build.

Bob, thanks for the parts offer! - I'll be getting ahold of you because there are a few early Ford parts that I still need, and you may have...

Nick, I happy for you. Soon you will two awesome rides to pick from. If I can help out with anything let me know. I know some model A guys here in Fremont that have quite a few nice left overs from past projects. I almost wish I had put a ford motor in my 34 pickup. "almost" Keep us posted. Gary
