Scrapyard SCORE!!! 50 Merc coupe.

We found this at our local "recycling center" (scrapyard) The employee in the weigh house said that an older guy has been bringing in a few cars a week .The township is on his ass to clean up .Along with this 50 Merc there was a 28 Chevy fire truck,a late 60's VW pick-up and a 57 Chevy 2dr post.All were spoken for except the Merc. We got it for $500 and had it hauled to the shop.It has a 76' 351-M and auto trans with a 9in rear.

Nope...honest. We are gonna check back at the scrapyard on Monday to see what may be there.

WTF! 500 bills! What a score. Are you sure it's a 351 M,and not a 400 M? My Merc has a 400M. It looks just like a 351 Cleveland. The heads are the same,but the bottom end is different. What are your plans? BTW...How's the other Merc doin?

 

The sticker on the valve cover says 351-M-400.I'm not a Ford guy so,I dont know much about these engines.My other Merc is doing fine.

GMgrunt is haulin a Merc (or whats left of it) to a HAMBER down south someplace. i don't think it has a single remotely repairable piece on it other than the roof and the buyer will have $500 into it by the time it gets to his driveway.

 

one day i was on line scraping some foreign stuff and 3 cars ahead was a hudson that was all there...by the time o got to the window thy had speared it and up on the pile it went

 

That has to be the best First Day of the Christmas Season buy that I know of.

how stupid are these scrap people? give them your number and tell them to call anytime they get an old car.

 

Thats how scrap works. Unless you can make friends with one guy - buy him beer or something - odds are you have to live there to catch the stuff coming in. They don't care, it's all just metal. I've even had them scrap cars on me when I'd already bought some and they knew I was coming with money, I lost a rough '41 Pontiac coupe this summer that way. No motor or trans but the rest was all there, the frame was bad in the back, but the body was decent on it. I come up and they not only had moved it, they stacked another car on top of it.


But on the bright side that also means they'll usually sell it to you, cheap. I bought a '48 Hudson here, had them hold it for me for the weekend and the day I bought it, had I not come back, it would have been gone, they crushed another one that was a lot rougher while I was working on this one to tow it home.

No offense but if I saw a car like that three cars ahead I'd drop what I was doing and run up there and tell 'em I want it and I'll pay cash for it on the spot - if it holds up the line a little bit, oh well.


I feel bad though now selling the piece of shit Merc we had for $750 - to a Hamb'er - a couple months ago. It didn't even have B-posts and it was so bad all he took was the top, doors, trunk and what was left of the quarters that we pulled off with our bare hands (and kicked a little at the wheelhouses). Anyone need a stock Merc frame cheap?? ....

hey nice find. gm grunt brought the merc down to me and ya it is bad but all i need is the top, 50 back window and b piller to convert my 51 from a moredoor to a fewdoor. a perfect peice to cut up as it is gone from the beltline down. id hate to piecemeal a buildable merc like thatyard find. any body got any help with a set of good to repairable 2 door doors to get me off and running on my build?

Unreal. It's great to know that your recycling yard was cool with you buying some of those cars before they were scrapped, a lot of places won't do that.

Sucks to think that this kind of stuff is out there and would get crushed if no one was at the right place at the right time to save it.

Just like the Barry Lake junkyard up in Cecil Wisconsin, I got as much as I could in four trips, but the recyclers were crushing everything and weren't being picky with which ones they scrapped first.

Great find, glad it went to someone who can appreciate what it is.

 

O.K., that does it! As of 1/1/2.7 it should be as tough to crush
an old car, as it is to get a title for one in the state of California.
I'm thinkin' we could start out with a fifty states thing, than spred
it world wide, like the global warming myth......
