Fun to watch the progress on a local project.
Watching your build mine seems easy!
Funny how some nights you think there was so much done,
but it just leads on to the next series of problems and solutions.
Smart to switch to the frame/etc. once you hit a block.
It's good to get something checked off the list.
I had that rearend setup on my pickup,
and didn't really like it although it was on there for 8 years!
The ball rubber was always wearing out,
and there was no way to adjust it.
Just make sure you add weight to the spring so you know where it's gonna settle.
Or make a bolt on plate somehow that may be moveable a small amount.

    Anyway enough from me!

    TP

  2. Thanks for the tip zibo. I'm liking the simplicity of the setup if nothing else. I'd like to think that anything that I do to the frame could be undone down the road. It was nice to weld on something other than sheet metal for a change!

  3. Got the rear end set with the hangars just tack welded for now. The hangars came from Pinewood's stash which made that job a lot easier and cleaner than most of my fab work. Had to customize them a little as well as take two towers off the castle nuts to make it work. Gonna reverse the eye on the main rear leaf spring and take a few others out to lower the rear a bit. Then I have to remove the main crossmember centerpiece and fabricate a new one like SamIyam described in his tech article. I'm gonna hold off on flattening the rear crossmember and see how it looks with the body on it first. I still am at a good place where I could channel the body a bit if it needs it but that comes with a whole nuther set of problems/issues so I'm not so sure I wanna go that route anymore. Waiting on some tires n wheels from my friend (he's also got the engine n tranny stored at his place waiting on those too) so I can roll the thing around. Lots to be done trying not to think about how much just one (or 2 or 3) tasks at a time . ImageUploadedByTJJ1370736430.213914.jpg

  4. Reversed the eye on the main spring with my HF pipe bender. Took out the smallest 6 leaves of the spring ( is that the right way?) placed spacers below the spring In the stack to gain another 1 1/2 inch. Think I need the engine and tranny before I can figure out where to anchor the yolk. Gonna mock it all up then blow it all apart to paint the frame so don't get too hung up on all the colors. 5. Detour is working. I even banged on the decklid a bit today. Between painting the drums, hubs backing plates and misc with KBS gloss black. ImageUploadedByTJJ1371259740.738122.jpg

  7. Check out SamIyam article in the tech archive. He makes a dropped bracket that holds the pivot joint and transmission. Fomokid has a 35 build that has the same setup you are talking about. Check it out too...

  10. Traded ItchyPit doors for decklids. Think this will help clean up the rear half of the doors. Beater 32 rightfully said the scratch doorframe fab looked like shit on the first try. Still smarts a year later! Yet i welcome the honest opinion, makes me try harder. I have been doing everything but working on that decklid. Cleaning the garage, working in the yard etc It keeps on looking at me wanting to be finished so we can get on with it. Been modifying some hinges to work as well. Think I'm on the 3 rd attempt.

Also got this wheel from TJ , hoping I can make it work. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1374638536.030294.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1374638205.692289.jpg

  11. Quick update from the red headed stepchild of 36 builds. Fabbed up some decklid hinges that started their lives as zephyr sedan hinges. Made up some struts to mount the hinges to out of 1x1tube. Recessed some cage nuts inside the tubes for adjustability. Pretty clean for lowcoe! Still working on that damn decklid. Hope to get it done soon. Then it's decklid gutter and everything else on the body behind the rear window. Loving all the other 36 builds. 12. Put the inner n outer decklid back together temporarily to see if I was anywhere near done. To celebrate I rolled the ol girl out to get some sun. Next project is making the decklid gutter rail using my brake and Shrinker. 15. You have some talent! Keep the progress coming. Thanks for sharing.

  16. Thanks for the encouragement 56.. I've been making steady progress on the gutter. I rolled over the 90 degree edge all around the bottom and it turned out pretty close to what I saw on the 40 ford I checked out. Also it helped to have FJ's pics to refer back to. On the top edge I used 1x1 tube and grafted it into my crossmember since this area is really tight. Lots of finish grinding to do. That's obviously my least favorite part. I promise I will clean everything behind the door jambs once I have that whole area fabbed. I won't move forward until that area is purdy. Really coming together!
Did you switch to galvanized metal for the filler panel between the decklid and back window?

    Lookin good man!

  25. Lowdown great build. Do you everyone down to Escondido on Fridays for "Cruising the Grand!" Lots of cool rides and great people.

  26. Every time I cruise grand in my 56 people say " is that dick muhlens56 ?" and I say yes....

I'm the caretaker of that car.

That's cool but it just makes me that much more determined to go home and create something so that someday people will say " is that Erich Schmidts' 36?"

Every car show makes me wanna be in my "shop". Is that wierd?

    Subscribed.

This project makes what I gotta do to my 36 sedan body look downright simple in comparison.

    Keep it going!

    :D

  29. Thanks Ron. Any word of progress on the coupe you gave up?

Thanks Cool Hand. You've been saying that about your 36 for a long time. Based on that chassis it's apparent you have the skills for a top notch build. We're waiting.......

Yeah, the shitty economy has intervened for several years now, keeping my hotrod building money at a near zero balance. I tried to sell it all, but it seems everyone is as broke as I am, so I've decided to keep it and just work on it as I can.

I've been moving my shop for the last month or so, and handling everything has gotten me motivated to start working on the stuff that don't cost much money again. As soon as I get moved into the new shop and all that squared away that is.

We're planning to build onto this new building fairly soon, so hopefully when that's done I'll have enough space that I can put the '36 body on a cart or rotisserie and just leave it out and handy.

Right now it's living inside a 40' van trailer so that I could have some free space inside the old shop to work.

That old place had just enough room for my tools and exactly one (1) project at a time.

When we get this new place finished, I ought to have room for all my tools and at least three projects and a race car to be inside without being right on top of everything all the time.

It'll be so much nicer than what I had, but it's gonna be at least the first of the new year before it's finished.

For now, I have to get my hotrod building fix vicariously through guys like you. :D
