My Halibrand v8 quick change that I bought from them new about 3 years ago blew up. Two broke teeth on the ring gear. I took it apart and found the two teeth so I took the rear to a local guy who builds quick changes for a living and he showed me everything that was wrong. The aluminum center section was never finshed machining so the ring and pinion never meshed properly and it jumped teeth and broke the gears. There was a alot of different things they did not do that contributed to this but that is a long story. The car has been running around two years and he said it was a miracle that it lasted that long. I contacted Halibrand and had to beg them just to sell me another ring gear and pinion at full price. They did not even discount the gear. The girl who works there keeps telling me Richard the owner is going to call me and after a week and a half I still have not heard from him, they are a bunch of crooks. I post this to warn anyone else out there running one of their latter quick changes of the problems you may encounter and to beware and not buy anything from them they do not stand behind what they sell. They wont even talk to the guy setting the rear back up for me so he can explain all the problems and what they*****ed up.
Why do you think they went out of business owing money to everyone?! Sorry to hear about your QC, sounds like your guy knows his***** and will get you back running.
Yeah, they screwed a couple of buddies of mine on wheels just before the went bankrupt, they both got their rear wheels and never saw the fronts even though they were paid for. Sorry to hear about the bad luck, hope your guy is able to take care of everything cause that roadster is******in and the Q.C. fits right in.
Hey Tim It's good to see your on here. How's the truck comin. I must be snakebit I keep havin problems with this thing but maybe I've about got em worked out.
i'm curious to what exactly wasn't machined completely? sounds like a funny explanation to gears jumping. fwiw, try to understand the perspective of a company that makes RACING components, lots of people put way too much power thru things, then expect the manufacturer to warrantee it! i'm not saying this is the case, or defending halibrand, i'm just saying....
One of the things that was not machined is where the pinion sit down in the case was not machined enough so the pinion gear did not sit in the case enough about a quarter of an inch from where it should be so the gears were riding at the very top of the teeth not down deep like a correct pattern should be but that was just one of the problems.
Quality Control blew this one, it sound's like. And their customer service? A challenge to So-Cal: Resurrect this company. Restore it to the core. Job's. Made in USA.
Who originally built the quick change? I wasnt aware Halibrand sent out complete rear ends ready to bolt in and run. -Jason

Yeah I bought the whole thing from them all I had to provide them was the old ford side bells and they cut the ends and put on ones that you could use 9 inch slide in axles and brakes. They shipped it to me ready to go minus brakes and dope.
We were a Halibrand dealer, lots of the stuff they sent out in the end had bad machining. A local guys has a set of wheels with the center index and lug holes off a few thou. Of course by the time the problem had been diagnosed Halibrand was kaput. Do a search here about Halibrand, McPhail, myself and others have hashed this over in the past couple years.

To add further insult to the name of Halibrand - recently a guy from Australia was having a tupperware 32 3 window built at a pro-shop. He spent mega $$$ to have this "nostalgic" coupe built. Repro everything except the 12" brakes and buick Drums and flathead. Well he sprung about $A6,000 for one of the newer type QC's - the one with the 9" ring and pinion. He had the shop set it up in his chassis etc etc. Goes to fire it up and the QC is*****ed - Bad Machining!!! Did the factory want to know about it - NO!! So as the story goes he's done his dough all 6 grand!!! now do I want a QC - yes!! A new Halibrand - no*****in way!! I'm saving up for one of Bob Wilson's conversions, or if I win Tatts - a repop from cyclone or the Hot Rod Works!! Cheers
