Nigel-Roy-Dan -- Thanks for the good words and concern. The back will be an on going work in progress as I have a disk problem and can not have normal back surgery. Doing physical therapy 3 times a week and wearing a back support when I am working on things. It's all good and I will get through it. Dan, that is a heater fan motor that runs my water pump. It was on the motor when I got it from ThingyM, not sure where Dick got it. I am not running an alternator for now, will put it on a charger after each run.
Tom hows the heater motor running waterpump working, does it have enough power?? Skip wanted me to try that but i wanted to run an alternator anyways so i diidnt, i help at my track so the less stuff i have to do the easier.
canadianal -- Al the setup works great and cost way less than a electric Moroso unit, it helps when I have someone like (ThingM) to make up the belts at this business. You are right putting on an alternator and turning the pump with one belt for your operation, Skip was not running an alternator so he was going to try one of these heater motors that first came out by (bobw). Saves a few HP on our small inch motors, your setup should work fine with that 308" killer motor.
My buddy Danny call the other night and we will have the last welding on the 3 joints tech wanted re-done. Just have to weld the 6 Rosetta spots on the sleeves. I am still not real happy with the brake system, I will get through this one race and them I am going to completely change the peddle system, connector shaft and the master cylinder. We will not have any races after the ANRA Finals in two weeks until April 2013. Had a little time today so I cleaned my panels and sprayed some rattle can Rustolium "Purple" on them. This color goes along with my race theme of the "Juice Bucket IV" like in the grape juice that goes with my last name of Welch. She may not be the quickest HAMBster on the track but you will know we are there. Maybe get the signage on the panels during next week and try to get a video shot next weekend. We will see.
i like the colour Tom definitly will show up, do you have the lump ports in that head ?? If so what did you tourque the little bolts to ?
Thanks on the color Al, it should look nice with the lettering & numbers in place. Hope to get them next Friday. No on the lumps, the head on the 194 is just a stock small chamber with the bolt bosses still in. Those are for the motor I am working on for next year. Check with twisted6 on the HAMB and I am sure he can set you stright, he sells the lumps.
Just got done adding a step to the main frame rail to help this "Old Dude" get in the car. As I am planning on running this car with me only, it was either build a step or install a ladder rack to the side of the cage like a fire truck.
That's a good looking step, Tom. Gonna put some non-skid on it? I found it necessary to put a couple hand holds on the cowl so I can lift my butt out of the seat.
Aw c'mon, you mean to tell me you can't leap in over the side like you did at 20? I mean, if we're re-creating the era ...............
i like the step, I am going to dig through my dads pile of stuff this weekend, he has a bunch of old carriage wagon steps may adapt one of those also to mine .
bobw - old6 - canadianal bob, would like to find some black non-skid, but only able to find white. I'll keep looking. Hand holds will not help as the crossbar at the steering is to close to my "Gut". If you look back at the pictures of my street test I have removed the angle bar between the two uprights so I can get my arm on the loop to help me lift out of the seat. That bar was put in when the frame was built and the car had a single roll bar. Note needed with a second loop. I will say that it is a tight fit for a old dude like me. Dick, I was still using doors on my 28 roadster even back in the days, I am thinking a future HAMBster with a 27 roadster and working doors. Know I could build a "Low Rider" like your's, but it would take engine hoist to get me out. Think I will stick with the door idea. Best of luck at Eagle Field, see you at the Finals. Al, If I find some old vintage step that I can bolt on I surely will, I think it would look great. Headers and intake look great on your car.
Hey Tom, Here's a source of several different types of non skid. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php?query=wing+walk&searchsubmit=Search&search=1
64 DODGE 440 - Tom, thanks, that is real nice stuff and if it can stick to 300+ MPH wings it should work fine on my 90+ MPH HAMBster.
bobw -- A couple of pictures (before & after) of the bar I removed. Like I said it was there only for single roll bar loop. Not needed for a 5 or 6 point cage. Helps me get my arm in to lift me up out of the seat. Picture of the step with a panel in place. I would like to find a step plate from a old running board and bolt it to the top.
injected27 -- That would wook fine if I could fine some, all I can locate is "Designer Tan" and it looks like s--t. Still got to check at Home Depot. Old6 -- Dick, you have a full plate of racing to finish out the season. Best of luck, see you on the 12th. Please do post the two races in 2013 at Barona and the Antique Drags at the Dell when you find out the dates.
Well I went to a Auto/Gas Station swap meet this morning and found the perfect addition to my new built step. An old "Cal Custom" foot. A true Foot Step, can't be much more clear.
I scored a vintage Clifford High Ram intake from a guy on the HAMB and I plan on using it on my 266" build this winter. As you can see it is a 3x2 setup with small cast in balance tubes. It was built to use 3 Rochester 2CG carbs that are large base. Because I do not need the full flow capability of this intake I am going to build three 1" high adapters that will let me run the 3 Holley 94 carbs that I have. This will be more than enough fuel and air for this motor. There is a picture of one in Leo's Power Manual that used a rec plenum with with 3 Rochester's on it. I would think that setup would support most all 300+ CI L6 motors up to 300-350 HP.
Man what a score. You sure are making it tough on the once of us trying to build oneand come up with new idea. You have got one slick ride and just keep making it better!!!!!!!
Thanks Jason for the kind words. I hope to post pictures with the painted & lettered panels tomorrow. I am real pleased with the way the car came out after a 1 1/2 year build. I just hope it handles as it should next weekend at our season finial. I am going to make 3 or 4 test passes to make sure it race ready. The 194 motor is stock with only a solid cam, roller lifers, Pertronix distributor & two holly 94 carbs. I will be happy if it runs mid 13 teens. Hope to be able to get it on the scales when I am there. I know she ain't that light. Also got a set of water jetted exhaust flanges and a Sanderson header kit from the same guy I got the intake from to use on the new motor. There are some good parts for sale on the HAMB.
Well friends I think the car is race ready. I would say it was complete, but I have been racing for to many years to think that. Race cars & hot rods are never done, we want them to be faster, handle better and be as safe as possible. First time on the track will be this coming weekend and after a couple of singles during qualifying we may be able to pair up and run it in Sundays eliminations. I am hoping for high 13's for it's first full out run. We will see, but it will be nice to be in the seat & on the track after a 1 1/2 year build.
The little digger looks great, Tom. It should perform as good as it looks. Hopefully someone will capture some video (and audio) of it next weekend. Good luck & enjoy those first passes. You've earned it.
todays expressions would be cool or awesome . back in the day I belive the term would be BITCHIN Nicely done TOM good luck on your first outing ,with SDRA WEST L JONES and all the guys in TULSA
It looks great Tom you have made a lot of progress lately good luck at the track let us know how she runs
bobw-- mudflap261 -- canadianal -- Bob, Larry & Al thanks for the nice words on the car. As Larry said I think it is BITCHING too. I had a vision from the start on how the car would look and I think it came out real close. The car has not made it down the strip for it's first pass and I have already started my modification list. I still do not like the brake setup, the operation geometry is all wrong and I will start changing it the week after this race. All the parts work fine, shoes, cylinders, lines, but the way it operates is all wrong. Put together a drawing to go over with Dick (old6rodder) this weekend and get his input. Then it is on to a hidden set of straps to hold the fuel tank solid in place, Tech don't care for the "old school" spring setup.
Bitchin' doesn't even start the description. I'm looking forward to seeing'er again this weekend. She's like a whole 'nother car. By the way, Butch suddenly isn't happy with our "courtyard" style get-together (likely someone's pissed & moaned to him). I'll still save us adjacent pits, but we can set up linear (like all the rest of the lemmings ). Or ........ we can set up a few rows back of the "front" pits where there's no abutting row. We could leave the front pits for the "oh-so-important" boys (likely the "whinees"). How 'bout closer to the regular bathrooms? What say you?
old6rodder -- Thanks Dick, I am real happy with the look. I generally get out to the track for a place in line around 1-1:30, you are there most of the time already. I will find your rig and we can talk places. Maybe in the next row by the waste oil drum, it is closer to the regular restrooms. Just remember all the CHHR spectator trailers will be in the dirt area between the rows this weekend. Makes it a little harder to find someone in the rows. See you Friday afternoon, I need to save a place for Danny V next to me on one side. Tom
Good luck this weekend Tom. The car is indeed BITCHIN'! Have fun and grin a lot. That's what it's all about.
