Hi I am in the process of refurbishing my 1928 A gear box, is it OK to run sealed bearings on the input and outputs, should I remove the inner seal or leave it in as well? It also surprises me that the bearings are metric, as were the bearings in the generator, I would have thought Henry would have used imperial sizes. Brendan
if the box had gear oil in it take out the "bearing shields". the shields are for "non servicable conditions"
I rebuilt my 30 gearbox with the "top quality" (read "Not Chinese") sealed bearings from Mac's Auto Parts. (Turned out to be French bearings). I've put about 700-800 miles on it this summer. In practice the sealed bearings should be better than the open bearings since they'll let less dirt and crap into the race. I mean, you will put a sealed pilot bearing into the flywheel right? What makes the transmission any different?
Little know factoid = Ball Bearings have pretty much always been metric. Reason most were first made in Sweden [FAG] and other European countries. Now England made theirs to inch standards. Taper bearings [timken type] are to inch demensions as they were a USA thing. As to sealed bearings in a trans NO. Trans bearings are suspost to be oiled from the trans oil. Trans bearing are usually shielded to keep the bigger chunks out of them.
