Sectioned my 1949 Dodge and now a chop

    You have some nice looking lines going there, keep up the work, ton of it but well worth it.

    GOt some sanding done, looks better at least one color. Now my shop is covered in red primer. Got the sides and back welded, just have to finish the top. Lots of grinding, I have to face the fact I will have to use a thin skimcoat of bondo, I;m not that good yet at finihing the welds, worried of grinding too deep and weakening the weld. Took one pic of a section of spot welds, tried to take one inside but it was too dark. The welds do have good penetration thru the backside. The new helmet is helping alot, don't know how I did without it.

    Finished welding, hammering, grinding around the rear window. Going to shoot some epoxy down on the roof and spread some filler. Weathers getting better, hope next week I can pull it outside to get a better view. Still lots of work left on welding the sectioned parts, but I'm happy with the progress so far, think the proportions are alot better.

    Been busy with projects around the house, can't believe 3 months since I worked on the car. Got the 440 in with new mounts I had to make, not yet welded in yet. The 440 is huge, it came out of a 75 Dodge D300 dually. Made a transmission crossmember, will have to see if it works.

    I sanded the top of the car, all the welds from the chop were finished, hammered and ground, and then I shot a quick coat of epoxy primer. Tying up some loose ends with the welding, such as the inside of the door jamp where it was sectioned. Had to cut a relief cut, open it up and weld in a pie shape to fill in the gap. Hope to roll the car out back and sandblast the nooks and crannies soon.

    I've been putting this off, I knew it would be a PITA, but I got the rear inner fender done. Took a few cuts, pounding to shape, and some filler pieces, but it turned out OK. Still have to do some grinding of the welds, weld in some spots I might have missed, and finish sandblasting it. The other day I got the door jambs, rain gutter and firewall sandblasted. Hope to finish the other side soon.

    Seems like a lot of work,for just an un-noticable 2" section! The chop looks great though....I think I would want people to REALLY see a difference,if I sectioned a car.

    In the photoshopped pic,it almost resembles a Chevy Fleetline. I like the way the roof flows into the trunk. Nice to see someone make one of these boxy MOPARS into a Custom. It's pretty rare...

    These year mopars have big slab doors, and I thought if I did a chop, for proportions it needed to be sectioned, but didn't want to take too much due to the front fenders, didn't want the top of the wheel arch right at the top of the fender. That and I only had 2" tape and no 3":D

    The proportions are very nice. I really like the section: it's what makes the car, IMO. Nice craftsmanship, too.

    Its been a long time since I updated this thread, but I haven't been doing much to the car. I have a 1971 IH Travelall as my daily driver and I've been working on that this summer, and bought a 1980 IH Scout. Too many projects and not enough time or money. Not going to try painting this winter even though I got the shop heated, so my 1946 IH K2 is on hold too. Rollled the Wayfarer in my side of the garage, the motor mounts are welded in and motor is mounted. I bought some urethane bushings and joints and DOM and going to start on the 4 link this winter, and looking for a radiator. Can't mount the front fenders or cut the inners without a radiator mounting. Today I just putzed with the other fender, pulled it out of the shed and sanded, taped the cut lines and sectioned. Did a few tack welds to hold it in place. Its a real pain the fenders so awkward and floppy to hold and line up. Will need to hammer and dolly alot to make sure the body line is straight.

    Awesome thread and photos. I will be starting this on my '56 plymouth in a few days. Thanks for sharing. I will be taking a bit of a different rout. I am contemplating loosing the 3rd and 4th door as well...lol? The section will be 3" while still keeping the fins at stock height. And, the chop I'm planning will incorporate the rear window and decklid as a whole(for the fins)....and be slightly down in the back at 4". Hope I'm as successful.
