I bought a 1937 ford 4 door sedan recently and it had this little blower fan mounted on the steering column. I’m having a hard time finding any information about it. I believe the logo says Firestone on it. Pretty sure it’s from the late 30s to early 40s. It had a separate switch to turn it on and off. I’m just trying to find a logo so I can hopefully recreate it. I appreciate any help or information you all can provide.
Interesting design. I ***ume it was sold at Firestone stores, in the old days they were almost like department stores that sold all kinds of different products.
Those are most useful as a defroster fan in severe weather. Early cars came with no heater or defroster ducting installed. They were sold everywhere from dealerships to drugstores carrying hundreds of brand names. Yours appears to have a heating element in it which is not common. The type with a fan in a cage is more common. There's also a vacuum powered version.
That's cool. I have one of the vacuum powered ones with the rubber blades but I never saw one like that before, I like it.
Yup. Our '53 had defrost, but needed help. Pops mounted a small motored, rubber bladed, fan motor on the middle of the dash. So one day my big sister wanted to test the safety of rubber blades. Shoving my head into it, while running, left a red mark, but no blood.**
Trico made them with metal blades and a cage around the blades, and with rubber blades and no cage. Never seen a rubber bladed one with good usable blades on it. They aged out years ago. Both were vacuum operated, with a thumb screw that you turned to get the speed you wanted.
I found it! It was sold by Firestone, which I learned that they used to be more like a Sears back in the day. The catalog from 1943-1944 showed the little blower fan in it. It said firestone on the top line and then Defrost-Aire on the second line. I am going to restore it and update the electric motor inside to 12v. I want to put it back in for vintage era sake. Also it has an ARVIN model 64 or 74h underdash heater. Finding vintage stuff is so cool, especially when it is a chore to find the information.
I actually was able to get some of the image from the blower, but it wasn't all there. I drew out the image on paper and put it in AI. It got close to the image, but not exactly what I needed. So I have a niece that is a graphic designer, I am seeing what she can do with it. I will post the rebuild since there is interest. Thanks again for looking, it has been exciting.
