Howdy folks, I'm installing new springs in the front of my 1951 Ford sedan and noticed today that there is something off on the bolt that connects the lower a arm to the bottom of the spindle. The side with the grease zerk is snugged all the way down, on the opposite end the nut with the cotterpin is far from snugged down. It's got the cotter pin installed but has quite some thread depth before it's snug. Maybe even 1/4 inch. I took it apart and it has a washer on the end and doesn't look like it's missing parts but is no way snug. If I snug it down then the cotter pin is useless and doesn't contact the bolt. This is on the driver side of the car. On the passenger side both ends are snugged down and the cotterpin is lined up. I probably did a poor job explaining this but I took some pictures. I want to know if this is something to worry about and what to do to fix it.
This is not my picture or car and I'm not installing drop spindles but this shows the bolt I'm talking about, of my pictures weren't clear.
Or if anyone has torque specs for this bolt and nut? Or even a write up on spindle install? I've never messed with the spindles before, and this gap has thrown me off since it doesn't just go together and I can't tell what the difference is from the passenger side.
Mine are stock spindles. The picture I posed with the drop spindles was just for reference, since my pictures (in the first post) didn't show a wide view.
On 49-53 Fords you set camber at the upper control arm caster at the lower arm it looks like the caster nut has backed off.To adjuster caster loosen the lock bolt at the bottom of the spindle support 'then place a wrench on the hex head of the bushing, turn the bushing until the desired caster is reached then tighten the lock bolt to 30 ft-lb torque. Hope this helps.
