Sell a part for stupid money or to put it on your car. What are your experiences?

I need some of your guy's opinions. Let say you have a part(not that rare) that you can sell for 20 X's what you paid for it, but you really want to put it on your car. Do you make a smart business decision and make some $$$ knowing you will probably never find or get a good deal on that part again, or do you put it on your car and enjoy.

Here is my situation. I have a set of Thrush Header Mufflers new in the boxes. I bought these 10 years ago for $20.00. I really want to put them on my 61 Biscayne but after looking on ebay a set of these sold for $593.00 this month. It's stupid money for mufflers that sold new for like $10.00, but I have always wanted to run these because my dad ran them on all his old hotrods when I was growing up. I remember as a kid he would give me the cool woodpecker decal and I would put it on my bike thinking I was the coolest kid in town. I know if I sell them I will never get another pair because I would never pay that kind of money for mufflers. And I could get newer better quality mufflers, but they wouldnt have the sentimental value or be as cool.

I know its stupid because it's just a pair of mufflers but I have been staring at these in my garage for the past 10 years and always waitng for the right project to but them on. But damn thats some decent cash for mufflers. Please give your experiences with selling or keeing parts you have an attachment to.

Please don't post how ****py, poorly made, 70's style, non traditional they are because I know that already. I just think they are cool and they have a special place in my early hot-rodding memories.

Personally, if it were mufflers, I'd sell 'em ... you have lots of other great options at your disposal. Porters, Smithys, Brockmans ... etc.

But if it's a rare engine, set of wheels, etc. .. run it!!

Ummm I sell alot on sleezbay, and just cause the last set sold for 563 or whatever, doesn't mean the next set will come close...you always need two guys with more money then brains to hit those numbers, and apparently there is one less guy now...

It's your call, but if you plan on driving your car alot - I'd sell 'em. These DO wear/rust in a hurry, and you're gonna have to replace them anyway. I used these back in the day and remember them well. They did have the best sound (IMO) of any mufflers of that time though.

Well, how ****py those mufflers were made is relevant, because if you install them, depending on how much you drive your car, they probably wont last that long before the packing is gone. Then you have a set of burned out thrush gl***-packs. I would either a) sell them, or b) keep them in my stash. I know MOST guys are REALLY not gonna like B, but these mufflers really didnt last that well. In this market $600 will buy some cool stuff if you shop around.

You can still buy Thrush mufflers, can't you? They still have that same sticker on them and everything.

I have a hard time believing that one auction wasn't just a fluke, who would pay that? Sell them and buy some brand new ones for $30 apiece, if you have to weld a flange onto them to use them on a set of headers that's no big deal.

Check out Thrushexhaust.com. Maybe your new ones won't be the exact same product, but they're still Thrush mufflers. My dad put some on his Road Runner a week after he bought it new in '69, they were the thing to have back then.

I, on the other hand ... would keep the mufflers. :)

You sell them and the money is GONE ...
You and your Dad have history with the mufflers.

MONEY can not buy that ...

    At least at my HOUSE

...unless the same guy wants more of em.
I say sell em, you can use the $ for other stuff. Good Luck.

  10. id run em like was posted earlier just cause the first set sold big on ebay doesnt mean the next 300 N.O.S pairs that are posted will bring the same money

thats the trend you know when someone posts something nobody else has it allways goes big then the hoarders see it and say heck ill post all the ones iv had in storage and become rich, riIC,RICH,RICH MWAHAHAHA....vicious cycle

$500 bucks is really not THAT much money these days. If it were $5k for
a set of mufflers it would be a no-brainer.
At $500, I would probably run them. A nice set of new mufflers will cost almost half that.

    Just an idea....

If you just like the looks of them, the Thrush Mufflers come with a large decal in the box that looks almost exactly like that muffler in your picture.
You could find somebody that would take that art work and screen print that onto the mufflers of your choice.

Maybe not the same, but would be cool looking and functional and if you had them make a few sets, you could run them on every car you own from now on..

It's not huge money, but it can easily land you a running engine, or come close to covering a brand new set of whitewalls.

REMINDER TO SELF FOR WHEN I GET THE TIME MACHINE UP AND RUNNING:

"Go back to 1971 and stop in at several K Marts. Buy up all the Thrush mufflers in stock. Come back to the present and put them on Ebay.............retire."

I'd ask myself this question... Do I have room under my car for a set of header mufflers??? If some idiot offered me that kind of crazy cash for a set of Thrush mufflers, I'd sell them in a heart beat!! Then go look for a set of new Cherry Bombs with header flanges to bolt on..... I believe you can still buy those brand new for real cheap! As stated by the other guys that responded.. Those will fry out and rust in no time flat and then you'll be out of the crazy money you could have gotten for those.. SELL THEM!!!.. That's my .02 cents worth.. :)

Did a bunch of research on the net and found the reason for the insane price. Part # 40169 Thrush Header Mufflers were used on some of the Baldwin Motion chevy's. That explains stupid price, mine are not these so I am on the way to muffler shop now. Thanks guys for opinions. And to village idiot now when you go to kmart in your time machine you know what part number to get. Your Welcome.

Grapp hit it on the head! I'm an e-***** also. Had an item that didnt get a bid at $5, ran it again with a .01 starting price and it went for $264 You must have 2 guys willing to pay that and that should be rare. Those are just mufflers, the will be rusty and ugly in a matter of no time. SELL SELL SELL!

That makes a lot more sense to me. I once got $200+ dollars for the base of an 80's Radio Shack CB radio antenna, because it was the one from Dukes of Hazzard. Any other brand or style would have been worthless.
