Technical Selling car to Michigan with bill of sale HELP

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by robracer1, Feb 20, 2019.

  1. I have used the "Old Cars Price Guide" to establish value. The California Franchise Tax Board didn't believe me when I told them what I paid for my '32 Ford Sedan. I sent them a copy of the price guide and several photos. Never heard from them again.

Sold cars out of state just check ahead and help out with paperwork, last one went to Indiana then it was sold to a guy in Florida. It is easier if a used car dealer can do the paperwork if you getting a car from Maine, have sold cars to New York, Oregon, Massachusetts and Illinois with a broker, all no titles. Yes you have to be careful and may have to put in some effort. Have wondered about bonded titles.

  3. I sold my 56 F100 to a guy near Kalamazoo 2 years ago with no title, just a bill of sale and a tag receipt (considered a registration in Alabama).
Not sure what he did, but I am not aware of any problems he had getting it titled.
Alabama is a no title state on cars prior to 1974, i.e. no title existed on vehicles built prior to 1974.

Michigan got wise to the New York registrations that were being sold as a way to title cars. They would sell multiple registrations for the same car but for different years. When they computerized their system multiple vintage cars and motorcycles were showing up with the same VIN in the early 90’s.

I learned important lesson this week, when selling car using a add the last line should read CAR SOLD WITH A BILL OF SALE ONLY FROM GA. PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR STATE DMV IF THIS IS ACCEPTABLE FOR REGISTRATION BEFORE PURCHASE

Also, make sure to say "Georgia is a non-title State, we do not have titles". ...or else you will get people contacting you that don't even want your car, but want to run their mouths about you not having a title.
