Yeah what you said!! I’m wanting to get something between’35-‘38 and would even be happy with a four door.
For rare parts I have no problem paying up for them. Parts that can be bought from a supplier that are being sold on here for almost retail, I'll lowball. If it gets turned down I'll buy it from the parts supplier and be able to return it if it doesnt work for my application. As a seller I expect to get lowballed and if the item has been sitting a while I usually just take it as I have a small two car garage for all my junk. lol Gordy
I'm not whining, I if anyone should be thankful for the HAMB classifieds. Since I quit the NSRA show circuit several years ago the HAMB, Ford Barn & Word of Mouth are my only exposure for my T5 kits and other parts. I can't compete with my competition on the internet with their cheaper Chinese parts. I depend on the goodwill of others that recognize a good product when they see it. I'm thankful that Ryan made me a HAMB vendor and lets me run my little ads once a week. No sir I have no problem with my customers. My comments were toward the constant line of low baller's and free freighters that contact me.
Twice now, purely by showing a couple of grille sections I bought at swap-meets, that I displayed on the (FAS) Friday Art Show, (Before the (FAS) was moved to the off topic section) Because to me they were artistically pleasing to my eye, people contacted me to see if I would sell those grilles. I certainly didn't display them to lure in people, that would potentially buy them. Each of these people, needed them for the builds they were working on. I agreed to sell them purely because of their need. One was a 37 Olds grille for the persons car that was his grandfathers, that he decided to restore, and the other was a 51 Nash grille, for the same reason. Both of the grilles were bought by me for $100.00 each. I just liked them as art pieces, because I didn't have either of those models of cars. I sold each of those grilles for what I paid for them, and I told both buyers, that I would fabricate a very sturdy, double wall thickness, corrugated cardboard box, with ample encapsulation by many wraps of bubble wrap. I did charge for the material, but I didn't charge for the fabrication. I had a connection to my old work place and I could use their UPS shipping as a known shipper, which back then I got a 75% discount by going through them, rather than by just going to UPS, which it would have been way higher. I told the buyers I would send them the tracking numbers and I sent them pictures of the receipts of what the shipping cost was, and that when the package arrives, simply send me a check for the original price plus what the shipping cost. It all went perfect and I got a 100% positive feedback on my H.A.M.B. profile. Now granted, what I have posted here and the related stories are rare and most assuredly not the normal stories you would read about here on the H.A.M.B. My point to all of this is, this is a vast network of incredible people that really are a large family so to speak, and through the vast network of the H.A.M.B., sometimes people get connected purely by what is seen here on the H.A.M.B., to me that is unique and rare. Thanks from Dennis.
The HAMB is half full of grumpy people. I sell here with good friendly results and almost no one tries to beat me down on my prices. I think about half the people are in their 70's or older, pain makes you grumpy. Lets all take a tylenol and be cool.
I started selling on the net over 25 years ago! The HAMB is no different than any other net sales! The beauty of selling on the net is you can reach every state in the union and some other countries! I have sold stuff to Australia and many states in the union! I have a guy coming from Wisconsin, next week to buy one of my cars! That’s the good stuff! The bad is you cannot see what you are buying, just pictures! Pictures sometimes lie! That is one reason people offer low ball prices! Something they would be comfortable with if the product is less than it appears! Sometimes people offer low price, because they don’t need it…just want it! If you sell on the net, anywhere, be prepared to field the squirrels! It’s going to happen! That is part of the bad part of selling on the net! You would not believe the offers and questions I have received over the years! It’s part of the game! On the other hand, I have made some ridiculously low offers before and bought things! And I have been violently turned down! lol Long live internet sales! Bones
At least your getting an offer..... just got hammered at a regional swap meet, dumped everything I had for $10 and $20 to break even with $70 entry fee. Ended up @ -$50 Fuel and Food. Big Ford show this week ... nope, staying home. Going fishing.
I think one of the problems right now is that money is tight for a lot of people due to inflation over the past several years. Dan
I like the HAMB classifieds. Haven’t sold a lot, but no hassles. Plus, the feedback option works great!
I’ve sold and bought a lot of stuff here. I try to price my stuff fairly to begin with, but depending on what it is, how much I’ve got in it, how bad I want it gone, I might dicker a little. Shipping is the ass kicker these days, when the shipping costs are as much or more than the parts. And the heavy or big shit, forget it. I have eaten some shipping costs before, but I try not to make a habit of it. I always give tracking numbers to buyers because that’s what I expect when I buy something. Lowballers are expected, and I always have the option to say no.
A few years back, a guy on the HAMB wanted a 37 Ford cowl, no firewall. I had one, didnt need it so I agreed to send it to him in exchange for some repro rocker panels for my car. When I got the rocker panels, he laughed and said he didnt know what they fit. They were not for my car.
I’m with Mr. Krylon , when I buy , I agree to the asking price or move on . I don’t press for low dollar . I normally have researched and know what the price I feel good with . Bottom line pay what they ask or move on. I had a TIG welder for sale , Bastard contacted me with a low ball insulting offer , I told him I will run over it and bury it before I sell to you for your offer.
Years ago at a friend's place his roommate had some parts I was pretty keen on, that he told me he wouldn't sell for less than $400. I could only afford $300 so kept quiet. A little while later the roommate tells my friend he just sold the stuff to a guy who came by in response to his ad, for $250. I posted some other stuff in the local buy and sell newspaper when those were still a thing, for a couple hundred bucks. The day the ad came out a fellow came by and offered about 2/3 of my asking price, which I reluctantly accepted while kicking myself afterwards. As it turned out, nobody else even called about the stuff. So I was then pretty pleased that I accepted the low ball offer!
I've bought and sold on the HAMB for years. I don't remember having any problems. I think people are buying less than what I was used to, the quality just isn't there any more either. There's a lot of junk being sold on the HAMB and it's obvious junk because they have 2-4 pages of bumping the junk. Now that Partswapper on Instagram, FB Marketplace and your choice of Groups you want to join on FB make the HAMB a bit more obsolete. I still like selling on here, but I will post my parts in all the places mentioned.
I've had this problem at at swap meets before. People want a quality part, but want to pay half the asking price. A serious buyer knows you only have to buy a quality part once. Especially fenders, hoods, grill shells.
Me, if I don't like the price I just keep scrolling. But, someone always wants to game the system, I guess.
That saying in the previous post just smacks to me of a lazy bastard who is so lazy he wants you to do ALL the work on both sides of a sale, and if you give him a price high enough he might get up off his ass and sell it to you! Same ones that pull a car cover off a car about a quarter of the way and take 3 pics with an asking price of $30k for piece of shit!
I remember back in 80's a Guy with a 2dr dodge that had a stock hood. A grandma car with cragars. He followed me 6 miles to see a hood I picked up from a friend cheap, a "Super Bee" black with white scoops, ram air 383, cable operated ramcharger induction. Very Clean and straight. Him and his buddies looking at it, It would fit his car. I tell him $75 He said how bout $35? I say you want a $35 hood, wait a minute, went got my pick axe, smashed 3x holes threw it.. now it's $35. They leave, we cut it up, put scoops on a Chevelle...scrapped the rest. Truth be told, the scoops looked better on the 67 Chevelle. I still have the pick axe...
Same. I'm of the mindset that a listed price already has some build up on it. I think of it just like a swap meet; only online. I serious doubt anyone has paid the asking price at a swap unless it was in the dollar pile or a super rare part. It's part of the game. People want to feel they got a deal. I agree with what others have said. You can always say no. Conversely, when I see part listed for a long time, either the seller doesn't really want to sell it or the price is too high. The market will dictate value. Shipping is also a deal killer to heavy or bulky parts.
I started this thread and I take full responsibility. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. I've had a Brookville 32 RPU body still factory wrapped for sale that includes a new in the box UP firewall. Retail value of the combo about 11,000, my cost for both about 9,000. I have had it for sale for longer than I care to remember for 8,000 clearly losing 1,000. I also have offered to help with delivery by hauling it up to 250-300 miles. I continue to get inquiry's asking what's your bottom dollar? DA! How much of a beating does a seller have to endure? I routinely talk to Kenny at Brookville about my various orders and he can't believe I still have it He says they sell 25-30 of this body a year and why nobody has grabbed up this bargain baffles both him and I.
Maybe your price is too low, raise it to 10,500 let someone talk you down to 10,000 or 9,500 win win for both parties. I think a lot of guys like to dicker over price - part of the fun ? Dan
