selling your car over seas question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by socalmerc, Dec 16, 2009.

  1. Crikey, I would think the shoe is on the other foot.
I know of three cases where cars have been purchased from the USA.... untold pics, many emails back and forth, all is good. Then when the car arrives in New Zealand it's found to be a rusted out heap of shit that's been glossed over. The pics? Oh yeah... they were taken ten years ago and the car's been sitting outside ever since.
In one particular case, the pics were great, but on arrival it was found to need $150,000 worth of bodywork to make it legal, yet it had been advertised as a rust-free car.
You guys are worried? Give me a break! It cuts both ways.

Come on guys .... It's the Buyer that takes all the risk!!
Once the seller has the money, the deal is done surely, and there is no comeback when the car is in a box on the Pacific ocean.

thanks for all the info guys. heres what he wants to do. pay me a deposit then wire transfer me the rest to my bank. once it has cleared then he will have his shipper contact me to pick up my car. i never sold over seas so i just don't want to get the shaft on this end. he will pay for all the shipping fees and any other fees. i tried reading his e-bay feedback but it is private, never knew they did that. he is from Germany and says he has done this many times. i'm gonna go talk to my bank tomorrow to see how they would do it. sometimes my bank is worse then the crooks with there hidden fees, its a credit union. now after the transfer has cleared how do you take care of the pink slip? do you just sign it over to him and email him a copy and over night it through fed ex or is there a bunch of paper work you have to do? once my bank says the tranfer has cleared then there is no chance of some one coming back saying it was a scam and they want there money back?
heres a pic of the car selling it for $7,000

i just dont want to end up like this guy:D

Sign the Pink slip off , the Freight Forwarder ( Shipper ) will send it with the car. Also send a bill of sale which you can get from DMV website. Send in your release of liability.
Really no big deal, once you done it once;)

My brother sold this car on Ebay, to a guy in England. He wired the money bank transfer I believe. Then the buyer arranged and paid for all the shipping etc. My brother then left to work in Brazil for 3 years. All I had to do was get the car ready to ship and be there for pickup. The shipping turned into a bit of a problem but it was not the buyers fault. But we got the car there. They do have a hard journey and the car looked pretty bad when it arrived in the UK. We shrink wrapped the flattie and tried to protect everything as best we could. Took almost 3 months to get to the UK! The new owner just finished it and sent these pics yesterday actually. Here's a few before and after pics.

  8. yup, I've sent a good handfull of containers to Norway since moving here a few years ago. Buying cars in the states is like going to the dollar store for most of us over here. With the dollar so weak and most Euro currency strong right now and the low import taxes for classic cars it's a no loss deal for these guys. Your bank will more than likely charge you for a wire, sometimes free, but but more than often 50 bucks or so...as well his bank will charge him and might take it out of the tranfer amount. Just double check you fees they can add up to alot of beers. Recommend to him to insure the car through his own insurance . I deal directly with the shipping company usually, say Helmann, one of the largest in the world. they carry insurance on the cargo and say the y take full repsonsibility for the loading as they pack the container with my prepacked pallets and cars or bikes . put bikes in crates with sides. earlier this year I had aconatiner with a roadster and 3 HDs and some pallets of tools and parts. All 3 bikes were roll ins to be tied down. All 3 bikes fell over...they for instance, put the kickstand down...and placed blacks UNDER the kickstand so to stand up straight..??..and put a single strap across the seat as hard as they could tighten....went back and forth on with sending pics and getting estimates for repairs for a week...then they said, well actually we don't owe you anything because all paperwork and filing has to be done within 3 days of container arrival...oh well, you learn a little more each day...

i went to my bank and opened a separate account for this and they said they will charge me $15 for the wire transfer. i get a print out of the transfer and i can with draw it or transfer it to my regular account.the guy told me it will cost him $3500 to have it shipped to him in Germany, does that sound right?
does anybody have any ideal what kind of agreement i should right up or have a standard one i could copy ?

Indeed it does like the hugely misrepresented piece of rusted out junk Willys ute body I got from Oz, bondoed and fiberglassed hood which weighed a ton and the body was crushed in and the crate broken. The shipping agent insisted on full payment of all charges before they would deliver but failed to mention that the fucker had been crushed and then told me to go fight the shipping line for reimbursement. We all know how that one goes don't we - yep it works both ways....

This is also exactly what I did.
I sold 2 different trucks overseas this year, one to Denmark, the other to Australia.
    Same as described above.
Hell, I had the money in my hand within a day of them transferring. Then it was 1-2+ weeks before the shipper came to pick them up.
So in my eyes, it took alot of trust from the buyers to have sent big sums of money to me, then knowing I had the trucks for 7-14+ days, then weeks and weeks before they ever saw the trucks on their end, being a long boat ride.

Having just completed an overseas transaction I just spoke with my bank this morning concerning this and they told me there was no need to create a shell savings account! that my account was protected just like any other and if money was removed it would be their liability since the money is taken from my account to their account then transferred by wire so actually does not come directly from my account in the first place. Now there may be some other advantages I am not seeing here??? as far as taxes believe me the IRS can track every penny!

It reduces the risk of paypal or echeck from tyeing up your money. I keep a separate account just for ebay [ paypal and wire transfers ]. It emptied after any large transaction and kept at a minimum. Family money is always separate. wire transfers are one way only but why tie your hot rod budget with your home account. I also only pay for all paypal purchases with a credit card, this gives you secondary protection.

Same thing I did. I opened a extra savings account so the chance no one could request checks for the account. I received 20% at the end of the auction. Then upon departure at the broker/shipper I had a bank draft from a local bank ready before I turned over the keys and title.
Now the car is ripping up the Austrailan country side.

I have bought maybe 50 cars to Finland from ebay and other 50 from craigslist and other sides. I have a trusted agent in SC who handles payment and pickup, I'll pay deposit by paypal.
Can't see any issues from sellers side, he got the car and money and releases the car after funds are clear. No hassle, no problems.
