Thanks to SEMA SAN, Hot Rodders live to cruise another day...

Washington State S****s S****page

On the heels of the defeat of a U.S. Congressional proposal to create a national cash for clunkers program, the SAN helped turn back legislation (H.B. 2059) in the Washington State Legislature that would have implemented a vehicle s****page program for p***enger vehicles more than 15-years old. Given the outcry of SAN members, the House Finance Committee chose not to consider the bill. Under the bill, qualifying vehicles would have had to be registered for a 24-month period and in satisfactory operating condition. Replacement vehicles purchased under the plan would have been required to have an EPA highway gasoline mileage rating of at least 30 mpg. Participants in the program were to be granted a sales tax exemption for the first $2,000 of tax paid on the purchase price. All trade-in vehicles would have been destroyed, regardless of their historical value or collector interest.

Thank you and congratulations to all who participated in this effort!

Awesome! I really need to join SAN.

But seriously, who writes these bills? short of killing collector cars and hobbies. That would have forced everyone to buy a new car. therefore using more unrenewable resources... So what if I want to drive my '78 f-150 to work everyday. It will be around alot longer than this new plastic ****.

4. We can p*** gay marrige but can't cuise or have old cars!!??
****ing dumb ****s!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5. A lot of the orchards around Wenatchee use old trucks to harvest and haul fruit. The still run and they're paid for. I see mid 60's trucks and earlier all over the place. It's a depressed area so they make do. That would sure kick them in the *** if it go p***ed. Glad they blocked it.
There's some real gems just sitting at the farms around there.

Man, you guys are kicking *** and taking names! I love reading about the victories of SEMA, congrats on the 'killing' of another bill! I have a question though, is SEMA nation-wide or a network of different groups in different states?

That one failed but the one outlawing lead wheel weights in Washington is going through. No lead wheel weights because they fall off, get ground up from being run over, the dust gets in the air and little kids breath it as their parents drive down the highway. It then falls back to earth, is washed into the streams, eaten by salmon and pollutes the food chain. That is a fairly accurate description of the first paragraph of ESHB 1033.

Not another lead panic ******** piece of legislation. These ****ing people need locking up. Do they have any idea how much lead there is in the world? its ****** every where and in far greater quan***ies than the miniscule amount that might get ground up and distributed by a million cars p***ing over it every hour. Bet they dont stop their dumb *** kids when they see them licking the walls of their house (and yes i'm sure thats what the general household level of inteligence is whith these people). There's more lead in house paint than any of these fear ****ering scares! I guess these dumb ****s need to come up with something to keep their self serving useless ***es in work.

If they spent more time worrying about the guy who puts those weights on the tyres and less time dreaming up ******** to make everybodies lives harder we wouldn't be in the mess we're in now.

There ya go, my first HAMB rant.

sign up on SEMA's mailing list... its simple, they will email when help is needed. it also doesnt hurt to load up their website once awhile so you can find out whats going on. its better than ranting on a forum about the *****s in government, all of us are aware of that... calling it out is redundant and does nothing to fix problems.

Most of these laws are actually well intentioned, but because they are so generic and watered down after the political numb nuts and extremists argue and compromise over them for months, they end up having negative effects in unwanted areas.

I suppose that even most of the proponents of these kinds of bills don't want actual nice collectible old cars crushed and destroyed. They mostly want all the old worthless garbage from being used by by whoever driving the old smoking Granda to the job at Walmart 75 miles away and the junk haulers with the '69 Ford F2Billion diesel that pollutes more than 7 entire freight trains. You know, we have all seen that kind of **** far too often. It even apparently says they don't want to take just any old junk laying around in a field waiting for the cool hot rod project to happen. They want the running and used beaters and they want to give whoever has them a few bucks to help get something new and better. Nothing really wrong with that in concept.

I seriously doubt too many people would be willing to trade in anything too cool for just $2000 in potential tax credits. It doesn't force anyone to do anything they don't want to.

The troublesome thing is this is actually not a total unreasonable ideal. The scary part will be when the do actually flat out propose to either outlaw driving old cars or seriously penalize it with high fees or other charges to essentially outlaw it for anyone without enough money to do it. That is the point where this kind of stuff will actually cross the line for me.

Until then, I am actually all for losing a bunch of 70's and 80's **** cars and trucks which is most of what will be traded in with these kinds of programs. And if it can helps save some people a bit of cash who otherwise could maybe use, sounds good to me. Now, I don't know all the actual details of the bill so might be some other alarming **** in it, but in concept, if done properly could be an ok thing for the most part.

Now that lead weight bill. Yeah, hell of a good idea and i am 100% serious. We don't need to continue just throwing lead all over the place just cause it is easy and cheap. Lead laying on the ground does actually leach into the water no matter how it eventually gets there. It doesn't need to be ground up or what ever. Just sitting out on the ground, over time enough of it laying around gets into the water and eventually ends up where we don't want it. Who would have thought all the mercury from coal burning would ever come back to haunt us from eating fish in the ocean. You just randomly throw toxic stuff around in the environment and it comes back at you eventually. That is just common sense. It isn't just going to disappear and go away because you don't personally see it anymore. It would be great if it did, but just doesn't.

Yeah, I am one of those dumb ****s who actually cares about keeping my **** clean for my own sake, my kids and others too. I admit it and I am cool with it. I can do old cars and still keep my **** clean and don't have much problem with it. Let the flaming begin if you want.

But to sum it up, don't get me wrong, I don't really support these kind of bills as I think natural time and free market ******** will take care of most of it just as a normal process and seems to be working reasonably well enough. I even wrote Pelosi last time congress tried the similar thing and asked her to pull the legislation. So, that is the side of the fence I am on and glad SEMA is keeping an eye on common sense for us. We don't need stupid bills like this. We need to have the economy fixed and they should just focus 100% attention on that and not worry about this kind of **** until that is solved.

21. I sent an email to Diane Feinstein to complain about one of these lame bills and here's the form letter I received back from her today. At least she replied. But she doesn't seem too interested in what the people she represents have to say. I kind of doubt there was a huge rush of letters from the people she represents telling her "we need more stupid crusher bills introduced".

Here's her reply:

Dear Mr. (RustyBolts):
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the "Cash for Clunkers" national incentive program. I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome the opportunity to respond.

As you may already know, on January 14, 2009, I introduced the "Accelerated Retirement of Inefficient Vehicles Act" (S. 247), with Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), and Charles Schumer (D-NY), to enable and encourage drivers to trade in their older, less fuel efficient car, truck or SUV voluntarily for a more fuel efficient vehicle. If enacted, this legislation would establish a national voucher program for voluntary retirement of fuel-inefficient vehicles.

Specifically, the so-called "Cash for Clunkers" program would reimburse drivers with a credit of $2,500 to $4,500 for turning in fuel-inefficient vehicles to be s****ped, and purchasing fuel efficient vehicles. The traded-in vehicles must have a fuel economy of no more than 18 miles per gallon, be in drivable condition, and have been registered for at least the past 120 days. Automobile recyclers would also be able to sell all the parts from s****ped vehicles, except the engine and drivetran.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy has estimated that this program would save between 40,000 to 80,000 barrels per day of motor fuel by the end of the fourth year, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions between 6.6 million metric tons to 13.3 million metric tons, or the equivalent of removing 1.1 million to 2.2 million vehicles from the road in one year. Additionally, the Council estimates that this program would reduce nitrogen oxides, which cause ground-level ozone - a leading cause of respiratory health problems, like asthma.

Again, thank you for your thoughts on the bill. While this may be an issue on which we disagree, it is important for me to hear the views of Californians throughout the legislative process. If you have any further questions or concerns, I hope you will not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.

[SIZE=+1]
Sincerely yours, Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

22. Those 70' and 80' in 50 years (if they last that long) will be to people then what our 30's & 40's are to us today. If they had that law back in the 50's & 60's we wouldn't have the hot rods we have today and this forum would be non-existent.

I am 68 and I guess with all this evil substance on earth, coal plants etc. (heaven forbid if we use nuclear power though), I'm lucky to be alive .. I should have kicked the bucket years ago. And I figured it up the other day, I've got a gas guzzlin' Lincoln Navigator (which I dearly love) and if I traded it for a Prius it would take me 17 years to make up the difference with the gas mileage difference and I'd be stuck drivin' the little POS.

Hey, Stude Truck, a lot of the 70s and 80s stuff make good "providers" for older projects, so why would you want to destroy stuff that can be used?
And another thing, while I'm at it...my 22 yr. old son has a Granada that he's hot rodded and he loves it. Like it or not, it is a 30 something yr. old car that HE thinks is neat. When I was his age, I thought 30 something yr. old '40 Fords and '37 Chevys were neat. Do you see what I'm getting at? I would much rather see the younger guys starting out with 70s American iron than jouning up with the "tuners".

24. One thing that's stupid about that bill in that reply from Diane Feinstein is that it says, "Automobile recyclers would also be able to sell all the parts from s****ped vehicles, except the engine and drivetrain". Why would someone bother with keeping a car in a junkyard if the entire engine and drivetrain were destroyed? Do you think they're going to take the time and pay somebody to remove the engine, remove the transmission, remove the drive shaft, remove the rear axle, and then carefully crush all those parts? They're going to just crush the whole thing. Why is it so important to crush the engine and drivetrain? If they go through with a ****py bill like that, where are we going to get old engines and transmissions from? Where are places like TCI and B&M going to get old transmissions to use as cores? More bad ideas from the people "representing us".

A bunch of us are living proof that lead isnt that harmfull, i'm tired of these dumb****s in the government trying to decide what is safe. It's not like 100 years ago when they made solid lead toys.

If it was safe 50 years ago when america was great, then it's fine now!

27. Yeah, and getting worked up over lead/tin solder is stupid too. Lead doesn't just ooze out of an alloy.

Simple answer .Fiananciers and Auto makers.

You cannot sell new cars if folks insist on driving the old ones.

New car sales have (had?) more to do with selling money than the supply of new cars hence the financiers cannot make money if knowone wants to buy new.
The financiers and automakers have shown that greed is still one of the 7 deadly sins and they are being punished.

Actually after 3 years you will be up for a new battery pack for the prius( which uses gasoline at the same rate your Navi does) so you never win with those overated toys. i think a battery costs around $10,000.
