I need some opinions about storage buildings. I have to build a large shed of some type to store all my extra blocks, heads, rearends and so on. It will have a concrete floor, but I have a question about the actual building itself. I was going to build just a regular wood shed, but a local handyman store has the sheet metal ones on sale. My question is: Will the flimsy sheet metal one keep my stuff as dry as a good wood one? I'm not so concerned about rain leaking in as I am with humidity. My Dad has a nice wood shed and even when it's humid out in the summer, it's still fairly nice in the shed. His parts never rust and he's got good front and rear ventalation. Any thoughts? Matt
i have an enclosed "carport" with the metal top. in the summer it gets so hot you can feel the heat radiate and it sweats. if you have the choice go with wood.
look around your area. there should be some one selling over the road semi trailers with the axles removed. sorta portable storage. they are super heavy duty and will last for years. we sell them and use them to. we have some 25 years old and they are still in good shape.
Craigslist and search for storage container . . . they are pretty cheap and will probably have some in your area. Go to the garagejournal.com for more opinions and other good info.
Leave the flimsy sheet metal ones at the handyman store! Build wood or get one of the contaners above. I have an old school bus out in the country, works great for heavy stuff like blocks and rearends, but you might not want one behind your house.
Last year a friend and I loaded his (deceased) brother's shop into a semi trailer and hauled it from Cali to NC. It sat for over 12 months while John built his new shop building. John ran an extension cord to the trailer and installed an inexpensive dehumidifier on a timer. Of course, everything was coated with some preservative (lathe, mill, hand tools, fab equipment, and thousands of Muncie parts), but the dehumidifier really helps! Pretty cheap insurance...
Just found a sweet deal on a 10'x14' wood Home Depot shed. Got it on craigslist. Some guy just bought it and now doesn't need it. Still in the box. Thanks for all the advice guys!!! Matt
