I am in the garage trying to figure out how to separate the firewall from the cowl in a sanitary manner. I can't see anything obvious holding it together other than an external flange. Before I pull out the BFH and make a mistake, can anybody shed insight on how these were fastened in the 30's. It's a 1930 Pontiac fwiw.
I think I see spot welds around the perimeter of the cowl at the firewall seam. If that is what they are just drill them out and carefully pry the panel loose from the cowl. They make a special bit for doing the job or you can drill through both panels.
it has spot welds, i have a 29 pontiac firewall here and it has spot welds, you can buy a spot weld cutter with a spring loaded center, they make the job alot easier.
I hate those spot weld bits!! They break so easily. I have a couple of hss drill bits that I reground the heads on them with less degree of angle so they are almost flat across. I just use a punch to center and drill away. It'll cut through the top layer of sheet metal and leave you a good hole to weld without destroying the second layer.
im really ignorant or young and didn't think they were spot welding panels back then. I was hoping it was a lead joint. Oh well, I own a spot weld cutter, time to use it. Thanks alot guys!
