my car has a .040 over 350 in it, edelbrock intake, 650 street demon and a 219/224 @ .050 duration, .485"ish lift on a 112 cam, where should my timing be set at? it runs fine now just cruising but if i try to get on it, its ok for a second then falls on its face. thanks

Sounds like it might need more pump shot.

Yeah that's not timing. Should be about 36 degrees on a curve that has it all in by 2000 RPM (depending on fuel). Pump shot sound about right.

try about 8 to 10 degrees ATDC mine is set that way also look into your fuel pump you may need about a 110gph pump for your carb and cam. It may be fine at idle but once you put your foot into it the fuel pump may not be enough. Peak power is made right before detonation in an engine so dont get to crazy with advancing the timing though.

Vortec heads don't like quite as much timing as the earlier heads...I'd go no more than 32 degrees total with it all in by 2000 rpm on a straight centrifigal distributor. I would start at about 5 degrees initial.

You will find the more radical the cam the more inital advance is needed . As long as it does not kick back when cranking 12-14 inital will give better throttle response . 32-36 total by 2500usually works good. Light cars seem to be OK with it all in at a bit lower RPM.

With a decent size cam and carb, it is not unusual to need 18-20 initial timing and 36-38 full in. Would definitely adjust the squirter pump for a stronger shot first. That is a simple try and it can make a huge difference.

  11. I run a roller cam with 510 lift with Vortecs. To run over 500 lift with Vortecs you need better springs and to run better springs you have to cut the spring pockets.Once you do that-they're great but about 32 degrees total advance at 3000 rpm is all they want before they get noisy.
