Oh yeah, why does a chicken coop have two doors?

Because if it had four doors, it would be a chicken sedan! :D God I love that one...

The Irish are never wrong. Sure its "pronounced" williss but it is "said" wilees. You can pronounce till your blue in the face, but the average joe is still going to call it wilees.

I have heard it pronoucned Will-eez all my life with the exception of a 2 - 3 people. I just don't think I can bring myself to saying, "did you see that '41 Will-iss g***er?"

And yes, I know a thing about ones name being missed pronounced.

But if you talk about "Will-eez" in UK people will think you're talking about *****es?

    Isn't language DOPE?

SamIyam got it right. words change pronunciation, spelling and meaning over time. And it's not just GAY...
Did ya know that Cadillac Bro-Ham which is spelled Brougham is supposed to be pronounced Broom?
    Yes it is.
I'll bet a bottle of Worchestershire Sauce on it!
(How many ways is that name screwed up, even by the British?)

I always pronounce it as Will-eez. It's very rare to hear someone say Will-iss.

You loose, you win, both are correct because we have what is called a "living language" that grows and changes and mutates.

Take for instance, the word "often."
When I was in the 5th or 6th grade (circa1959) we were informed that this word would no longer be pronounced "Off-ten" but instead, the "T" would be silent and it would be pronounced "Off-en".
And we were punished (only verbal abuse) for using the old "wrong" pronunciation.
My three year older brother, didn't get this bit of diction dictatorship foisted upon him so he still pronounces it "Off-ten" to this day.
Besides, He was born in England and has lived in the mid-west most of his life so his way of speaking is all weird anyway :D

How is GOW pronounced in Gow-Job?

Is it Gow as in Cow or Bow Wow?
or is it Gow as in Mow or Show Low? :D

  19. You spell it "FISH," I spell it "GHOTI"

GH as in "laugh", O as in "women", TI as in "action" :D

  20. I always heard it was pronounced "Go-Job," because it rhymed with another favorite thrill.

No wonder "English" is such a difficult language for "furriners" to learn! :D

  23. "You say tomato I say tomahto."

I've heard it both ways and said it both ways. I'm sure if you had the right dictionary you could prove it one way or the other or not.

By the guy a beer and you'll still have a beer.

Maybe I'm just a **** (and I am), but this post and the HAMBer english lessons just made my day so much that I'll buy you a beer, Zenor! You just have to make it to Scottsdale to get it...

PS Will-eez as far as I've ever known...

Ya know what irritates the hell out of me is when trying to have a conversation with someone, you'll be talking and the person you're talking too will interrupt you by repeating one of "those words" like we're talking about, the "other way" in an attept to correct the way you speak, and do it repeatedly.
I was talking to a woman, (it's usually women, I've found anyway, or maybe I don't usually try to have intellectual conversations with guys, in person because they are too apt to switch from thinking to fighting.) who kept parroting my words, almost one per sentence, and I just stopped and told her, "If you want me to continue you have to stop trying to make me speak "Boston." (which just happens to be where she was from.
And everyone else in the world knows Bostonians say everything "wrong" anyway! :D
They don't even have cars there... They have cahs!)

Nothing against Boston women by the way, I usta date one, who spoke "Boston" with a tinge of "V***ar", but she wasnt the one I was talking about above.
