Oh man, this back window is killing me, but it looks like we might gots a handle on it now. Here I welded some strap to use as a guide for cutting the back panel out.
Long suffering helper, JT, holds the glass up to be fitted. There isn't enough tension without a full surround to hold the glass in place with the original gasket. The best way to hold it in place will be to use urethane and some kind of decorative rubber molding to simulate a gasket. With some tweaking of the pinch weld the glass fits well. I still have to fabricate a removable ledge of some kind to hold the glass up from underneath. Then I have to fabricate a cab cover and parcel shelf. More to come tomorrow.
looks kinda hot there! its about 60 now, it was 75 today here! loved every minute of it! sorry nads, seeing you sweat reminds me of me, at work!
I went over and busted my ass helping out tonight(Actually I drank Nads' beer and handed him tools!). The house is incredible; someone needs to buy it! We took a ride on the back road in the '34; funny Nads quote when the headlights flickered out, "Were gonna die!" Classic!
Naw, my company flew me out there on buisness. But I would have. Nads is very dreamy, especially when he's sweaty. No homo.
Yeah, yeah, here we go, I fixed all the rust in the cab back and welded the floor pans solid. I fixed the power seat and I came up with a support for the rear glass. It's a T-bar with a hinge at the bottom so the glass can be removed. I've got to fabricate supports for the end that simply bolt on. I'm gonna have to make a parcel shelf that's removable and also a filler piece for gap in the rear. It's a very sturdy support and once the glass is glued in with urethane it's not going anywhere, the stainless trim will give added support.
I would've never thought to do that window that way. Are you concerned that the wingnut may back off due to vibration? Nice work on all of it BTW.
I was thinking the same thing..I never would've thought of that! A jamb nut would hold, used with another nut. The wing nut is probably for mock up! Thanks Nads, for the update.. been jonesing. Too hot to work here, lately.
It's gonna be done with a jam nut, I just used the wing nut so I could do the job single handed because I was alone. The original idea was to put a nut on the other end of the all threaded rod but I had to cut it below the T because it was hitting the glass. You would have use a jam nut anyway because you can't put too much pressure on the glass but it is toughened. Also the steel channel will have a rubber or cork insert. It's all trial and error. BTW, this idea came to me in a dream.
Nads, you and J.Fishbeck are inspirational to me. You both got me ready to tear into Stewie when I get home on leave.
Nads, I was noticing your t/light hinge.. It looks like yours doesn't need to pivot inward, to stay away from the qtrs edge, when it extends out. All because your inner pivot is all the way out, to the edge of the quarter. Might just be because of the cameras angle.. I mention it, cos' that would make it easier for future reference.
I'm not sure I can visualize what you're saying, the hinge works well but I haven't come up with a latch yet, maybe a cable operated popper adapted from a late model fuel cap. Here's what I'm doing now, I've lost it. I've a Batman fan since I was a kid, I love the old series, and the Batman logo was a punk rock favorite too, and I'm an aging punk rocker too, so I beat a logo out of 22 Ga sheet and welded it into my cab back. I didn't use a form, just hammers, dollies and the floor. It looks very third world child labor but I like it.
Tonight, I'll hang the doors with JT's help, and hopefully get the window frames chopped and the reliefs cut into the door tops for the extended dog leg to sit in.
Damn that must mean that everything I do is ???.....far less skilled than 3rd world child labor - whatever that is. I like it. Thanks for the update, great way to start the week.
I was having problems articulating, wtf I was trying to say! Hahaha.. It looks like your t/lite hsing wouldn't touch the qtr pnl, once opened or all the way out. I say that because it 'looks' like your inside pivot point, is just about all the way out as far as it can go. Making me wonder if you need the second outer pivot point(the one closest to the t/lite hsing itself) at all?! But ANYways, don't mind me.. The Faction, used to used the Batman Symbol (1234 -1234) Alan Losi, used to practice at my hse on the daily. One night, he brought Steve Cabellero over to skate the halfpipe in my backyard(22yrs ago, Damn!) Cab, played Bass & Guitar in The Faction. It was such an honor to meet and skate with him! Rock on Nads..
Damn, great story Jay, I met Steve at the 2nd Rumbler's show in NYC, nice dude. I used to play in the band that would become Chumbawamba when we were called Chimp Eats Banana. I'm still playing music even though I've never made a dime at it.
fuck nads, your pile of welding wire and scrap metal is starting to look like an el camino! Nice work mate!
Thanks Keith, hanging the doors was a pain, I', gonna have to space the hinges out with shims, the front part of the door is mighty close to the dog leg but it will clear, I won't be able to use the original weatherstripping though. The door front pillar is still matching perfectly but will need to have an inch or two chopped out of it, no biggie. The b-pillar is all outta whack, I had no idea I had sloped the back that much when I chopped the top. I need some extra door tops if anybody has any, just scrap pieces. I'll post pics later.
I think you have. But I guess somebody has to keep those Florida fires burning bright? Seriously man, cut that shit out and hang it on the garage wall with your gas pedal. haha.
Kevin, it'll be hidden by a tonneau cover most of the time, it will only be shown at the Old Town Cruise, ha ha.
