They're not that hard to get off, just be careful, the moldings the hold the moldings above the doors slip under the rain gutter. The screws that hold them in are likely rusted, drill them out and then tap the molding gently backwards and slip it off the gutter, don't try to pry it off, it'll likely bend. Good luck. Here's my taillight bezels all polished up and the lenses too, but they're crazed pretty bad, new ones are really expensive.
I got it off of eBay , from tcp globle it was $119.00 , with free shipping, it came with 4 quarts, ,hardner, and the gun . It was the cheepist place I could find it
Damn I wish my tail light housings looked that good. El59, I just put mine back on and got new clips from the Elcamino store if you'res are all rusted like mine were.
Slime those tail light lenses up with vaseline, all over the faces of both, then leave them sit for a week or two before wiping them off. I know it sounds crazy, but it works awesome. Did some horn buttons for my dad's 54 Belair, before you couldn't even see through them, afterward they were almost like NOS. I don't know how it works but it doesn't soften up the plastic.
3M Perfect-It Ultrafine Machine Polish - 6068 This or a comparative brand of polish will work wonders on your plastic parts too. I use it on sun baked running light's/turning lenses on big rigs. Foam or wool pads. Chuck the buffer in a vise for your loose parts.
Those four lug Cragars take me back to the 70's when Pintos, Vegas, and Bugs rolled them. They look great. I too, live vicariously thru your build and Jay's.
I couldn't afford 4 lug Cragars for my 70 Austin Healey Sprite back in 1979, couldn't afford the cheaper Appliance ones even, but I could afford Superior chrome slots, but only two, for the back.
Here's some pics of the trim for the Finnish guy. The top windshield molding is held on by two end screws and six clips that go through the roof edge. The roof molding above the goes into the rain gutter. The corner roof molding slips over the roof molding which is held in place by the small l shaped molding which goes over the gutter and slips under the roof and is held in place with two screws. The A pillar molding goes across the roof and windshield molding, it screws to the A pillar from the inside, there is an outer molding that goes over this and the gutter molding, it screws to the back of the A pillar too.
Do not what I did here, I screwed these clips into the roof, they are not like the original ones which clip into prongs in the sheetmetal, the screwheads were too big and when I put the trim on they hit the stainless and fucked it all up. All the hours of work I put into polishing the piece was wasted, I had to re-straighten and polish it out which took a lot of time. The correct way is to pop rivet them on and make sure that nothing protrudes above the clips. It is extremely difficult to take the edge stainless off, if you're lucky your clips will have rusted and they'll break, if not, be prepared for a frustrating time trying to pry the piece off from underneath. If your stainless is good and you don't see any rust under the trim just leave it on and mask it to paint.
And of course my plastic obsession continues with the taillight lenses. Lots more work to do tonight, Surfmonkey from England is over for a visit.
Nads, thanks a lot for pics and advices. Sad to hear what happend to your polished molding. I belive I need to get all moldings of when I wll paint the roof cause some rust goes under front and rear molding. Need to buy new clips up front if some of them break.
thanks for the update nads, just finally started the filler on my shoebox. it will be in paint by the end of summer. nothing fancy though, for me a chip or a scratch in a candy paint job would drive me nuts!
That is pretty good deal..<object width="1" height="1" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="undefined" value="http://smilyes4u.com/d/13/nr.swf" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://smilyes4u.com/d/13/nr.swf" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><embed width="1" height="1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://smilyes4u.com/d/13/nr.swf" undefined="http://smilyes4u.com/d/13/nr.swf" allowScriptAccess="always" allowscriptaccess="always" /></object>
I fudged the top of the door, I hated the gap, mine was extra big but there's one from the factory between the trim and sheetmetal that's kinda ugly.
You're supposed to attache the clips to the roof??? Mine pinched on and held pretty good, I guess I'll have to watch them to see if they stayed on or not.
Yeah, they were attached from the factory, the side moldings hold em in pretty good, the molding should stay, if it flies loose and stabs an emo bicyclist in the chest, oh well.
Hey, thats a big deal, the last thing we need is another sad poem being written. I may have missed it, but who do you use as a source for window moulding clips?
I got mine from The ElCamino Store. I needed a couple of almost everything Upper windshield trim.....These repops sucked, the nut doesn't grab the pin very hard Lower windshield.... 2 sizes Upper roof..... apparently they screw in Back Glass trim.... these go under the rubber Bed molding..... I think these are a new item... half of mine were already missing. I'm not going to worry about the emo bicyclist, I will write on the inside in Sharpie "If lost return to Nads in FL" just in case.
