i'm really really sorry to hear that Nads..i know you put alot of work already into those quarters..good luck..
nuts. At least you hadn't mudded it and painted yet. or crushed the stainless. that would have sucked x2.
Just stumbled on this thread by chance killing time at work...This is some of the funniest shit I have ever seen. Nads - I feel your pain. Nothing worse than damaging something you spent hours repairing. Just walk away, man. Let it sit for a while and come back to it when you've had enough time to come back with a clear head.
Don't feel too bad. '60 Pontiacs have that trim down the top edge of the quarters? I've lost count of how many I've run across in salvage yards and the like that have been scraped down that trim.
These damn bitch coves look awesome but they're hard to strip and sand Luckily this thing was only repainted once, so there wasn't tons of paint to strip but the factory primer is tough to get off.
check mine out! not that bad. i got patch panels from ems, i have a friend whos going to weld it for me, cause i cant, and dont want to fuck it up!
Here's an old Shriner tag a pal gave me many years ago, I think now is the time to use it Oops wrong photo
Here's the one on the wife's wagon. $3 swap meet find, I love this cheezy old junk, lokit how Cadillac is spelled, funny thing is people think the wagon IS a Cadillac.
HAHAHA...........the Welfare Cadilac plate is awesome, all you need now is a food stamp duct taped to the dash to complete the look.
What!? No one even knows what a Ranchero is. Any time I tell anyone what kind of car I've got, I invariably have to say something like "it's like an El Camino... but Ford".
It works both ways. I have a dream car I'd like to build, a phantom 60 Starliner Ranchero, a Starchero, or Ranchliner as it were.
Hey Nads... that's some mighty fine sculptures you're cutting off... might wanna put them on epay as fine art!
Both doors had the cages for the floating hinge fastener rusted out. I had to make some from scratch, luckily both doors were rusted where the pockets were so I had access to fix them. They aren't pretty but they'll do the job. Quarters primed, they need more blocking and sanding but they are sealed with epoxy so i don't have to worry about rust, I live in Florida, fresh metal rusts before your eyes. Rust!!!!!!! The previous owner had done some messed up things with the hinges, replacing the proper hardware with nuts and bolts, it's being fixed right.
I ran out of gas this morning, my wife rescued me, as usual, it would be nice to have a working gas gauge on one car at least.
Oh hell, what have I done? The hinges are messed up bad on this car, I bought a good one for the passenger side and I'll need to pin and bush the others. The drivers side loer hinge floating plate has the bolts broken off, I'll have to cut the face open to get it out. It's a tight spot to reweld but I think I can do it. There's no way to get a drill in there to drill it out.
The hinge screws were rusted solid, I had to heat them with MAPP gas, they came loose eventually but it was a bitch. The doors are off and I'm taking them home where I can fix them properly and I can paint the jambs nicely too. I can't decide on a color though, this truck was white and I'm thinking about returning to that with pink pearl over it and pink metalflake on the roof, fin and tailgate tops.
I hate those big phillips-head door bolts that Chevy used, they never come out for shit. What a crappy idea, may as well just weld the damn things on at the factory for all the good those will do. I just got done fixing a similar hinge situation on a '69 Chevy truck, the previous owner jammed some shim stock in between a huge gap and boogered a goiter-sized ball of weld onto it, looked awful, had to cut up another door to repair it. Progress looks great, but are you seriously thinking about two-tone white and pink? Red with a white roof looks so right on that car.
Every damn El Camino made was red and white, that's all ya ever see, I hate red cars anyway, I like the idea of a burly he-man like myself driving a pink truck.
I couldn't agree more. Man, you are kickin' ass on this thing. You are inspiring me to work on my poor old '64 Impala 'vert...
I can't say I'm loving every minute of it, it's overwhelming at times, but it ain't gonna fix itself. I'm finding out just how little s available for these things, it used to be worse when I had my first one back in 1993, but exclusive nuts and bolts are unobtanium. I started fixing the bottom of the doors, the driver's side isn't bad at all, the passenger side is worse, this thing musta been parked on the street back in Michigan. It has a Michigan State University sticker in the back, I'm assuming that's where it's from, the Rust Belt, it would explain a lot. Wish me luck welding the hinge plate pocket back together, ain't much room down there, maybe I can JB Weld it or just plain fiberglass like I did on my Sprite back when I was 16.
You really dive head first in your projects! Youre doin so much in so little time! really happy for you, nothin better than workin on your dreram car! The scraping on the garage wall reminded me that i also have a dent in the hood that i've yet to pop up, and reminds me how much of a dick i am! I parked a tad to deep into the garage and the vise on the work bench left a mark right in the middle the hood! Ouch As for the fuel gauge....is there anything more old school than runnin out of gas? I fixed my gauge last year and was great to know how much gas i had w/out poppin the gas cap and look w/ a mag light how much is left! Didnt last long thoug! I accidentaly ripped (kinda ripped really) the wire on the tank side. Easy fix, just not as easy as you would think! Sorry for the long bs post Nads, talk to ya soon, Nick.
