I appreciate your opinion! I was thinking that since there are no sharp corners on the rest of the car, there shouldn't be in the taillight section. I had tried simply rounding the corners, etc...

I also appreciate your opinion! I think it also adds movement- the trailing edge of the lens should be at about the same angle as the leading edge of the front fender below the headlight...

I'm going to try to get the rear gravel pan done this week so I can move onto finishing the taillights.

Last night I started on my rear valance panel. I still need to make the ends, but it's a good start. I will be leading in the corner where it's welded to the body. I hope to get started on the taillights tomorrow night.

Here's a few photoshopped pictures done by Rikster of the taillight area. I'm leaning towards the one without the windsplit and the beehive design, or moving the windsplit down and rearward and ditching the Merc lens.

Thanks again to Rikster for doing the photoshopping- It was a nice surprise!

I agree. The windsplit is one of my favorite features on a Shoebox but with out the stock tail light it really doesn't lead to anything and gets a little tight when it's right under the Merc lens.

I really like number 1. Don't really care for the windsplit in either position. Whats it look like with T/L #1 higher and no windsplit? I flipped back and forth from 1 and 2 and like the t/l higher without the windsplit. But it's your car and build and you've got to decide and be happy with it.

Another vote for photoshop #1 of Rik's renditions. The bumper wrap onto quarter panel seems a bit long, how about sliding it back a bit and adding a continental kit? On stock 49-51's a kit looks like ass in my opinion, but with the extended quarters and absence of wind splits it would work. Just throwing it out there.........

Yeah, like I said, I didn't expect it- I sent Rik a picture to see what he thought and he sent me the four photoshopped pictures and no opinion! I took that as "It's your car...."

Agreed. I like the windsplit, but for this car it's custom taillights. I'll save the windsplits for another project...

I agree. I think if the lenses were up just a couple inches, it would balance out the "topheavyness" of the rear quarter.

I've got my gravel pan made, so I could either trim it down or leave it as is and stick with the plan of extending the quarters about 4".

first picture, smooth quarters give length and tailight treatment is unique. and isn't unique what custom is all about? great build, keep at it!

some kool lookn ideas there i like the extended smooth quarters thay go well with the poncho rear bumper with its longish ends. are you going to mount your number plate into the boot lid or on the rear bar with a number plate surround ( ie: kaiser ) for example.I think all of this will also affect the overall look of the finished job. i like that look i think it"ll go great with your pillarless choop as well.

Thank you! I do think that's what a custom is all about!

I will be mounting the license plate on the bumper- I'd like a kaiser overrider- but they're not easy to find! If anyone has one for sale, let me know!

It's not going to happen Jeff! I'd like to see this on the road in a couple years.. sectioning it would add another 6 months to my timeline!

    Almost every shoebox :)

I think the taillights will look better up a couple inches.. I'll be cutting out the stock taillights tonight.

A little bit of progress... it's been too cold to work on things out there the past few nights but I have gained some ground... I made the ends for the gravel pan, cut out the passenger side taillight, and started installation of the '54 Mercury taillight! I'm excited.

    Thank You! I'm having fun!

Thank you Sir! I'm just trying to build a cool custom like they would have, being inspired by things the builders of the '50's could have been inspired by.

The forecast is looking good for next week, which means progress for the shoebox! I'll be sure to post more on the taillights at the end of the week.
