I just got my 2006 entry form for the Shades of the Past event. They have raised the cutoff to 1972..... :( Are they so ignorant that they can not see the numbers were down when they raised the year cutoff to 1964 ?

The pre 49 bunch does not want all the &@^* late models...and are staying away. I may stay away from the show grounds too......and be like MOST of the late model used cars that HOG UP the motels.......just go to town and do not register for the event.

I do not go to Pigeon Forge to look at Camaros, Mustangs and such " parts donor " cars.

    ..Rant over.....

Although the '05 show was good the numbers seem to have been droppin for the past few years. I think they're tryin to be like Good Guys. They need to go back to pre '49. Or at least keep it mid sixties.

Where are they planing on putting all of them?
Did the lease expire yet on the land; it was up for sale.

As that event has grown (become more crowded with spectators) it has become harder and harder for me to fight the traffic and crush. If you don't know the backroads in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, you're screwed.

Remember back when it was all in G'burg, in the parking lots off Airport Road?
Rooms in Pigeon Forge were $19.95.

Spectators and townies ruined that, too.

Think I would rather do NSRA Knoxville and then go to the mountains.

I have also gone to this since it was in gatlinburg, before it got moved to pigeon forge. The car count has been dropping at the show every year. Last sept. we went in sat. morning, the car count was way down they said 2700 cars NO WAY They raise the year cutoff again this year. It is all about the $$$$$$$. There is more cars in town that do not go to the show than fight the traffic to park in a cow pasture.

  9. Just another reason to go to events like the Jalopy Showdown or the HAMB Drags.

The Body, headlights, windshield frame, 25 vent hood, gas tank, frame horn covers, the bumpers and bumper braces are all from the original car. He sold it in 1974 at the NSRA Nationals in St. Paul. The new owner pulled the Roadster body and pieces and built a " fresh 32 " with a different body. He basically just used the frame, running gear and wheels. He was planning on building a new roadster but " got married ".......

I got the 32 stuff from him shortly after he wed.

The above photo was taken at a GoodGuys event in Charlotte......when you, JimA worked for them. You were the announcer at the awards on Sunday....

You'd think they would realize, that even though the cut off date keeps getting later & later, the late model guys don't care much about coming out to the ranch & hanging out with the pre-'48 guys.

Their efforts to increase registrations is inversely affecting the number of pre-'48 guys willing to attend. The fun of that show is seeing the pre-'48s during the day at the ranch and then hitting the strip at night to check out the "late models".

I enjoy that show. I hope they don't screw it up.

This ******** about 25 year old wrecks being "antiques" is killing the old car hobby for stockers and it looks like Rodding will be next. Choose the meets you attent wisely. See ya at the ShowDown and Road Agents meets!

Its was only time. just like the music, you can not find any strictly 50 or 50/60 music stations anymore.

I am all for the open dates. If the pre-49 crowd does not like it, they can stay home or create their own shop. Maybe its the West Coast movement that is finally catching on here in the East Coast. There are not many shows on the West Coast that are strictly pre-49.. Most are open to later years...

By limiting to 49, you leave out all those cool customs that should be part of the action.

Stop & think about it- in 1969, that car was 37 years old.

In 2006, a '72 Torino is 34 years old. Not much difference, time-wise.

    So I don't get the guys saying that '72s aren't cl***ics.

There are plenty of traditional hot rod shows out there now. Come to Austin at the end of March & check out one of the best. ;)

WAKE UP BUBBA....The fact is..... the pre 49 crowd is staying home......

And the used car back lot POS specials are not filling the VOID....
Most of the 49 up stuff is JUNK.......( there are a few exceptions ) ....clapped out old stuff that escaped from the crusher to be peddled by some " part time used car salesman " ...They have taken over the Motels......when you leave to go to the event........some used car shiney slicker parks his 63 uglymobile in your parking spot...... while taking some other POS to the show..

The ONLY reason I go now is the 1932 Ford DEUCE SHOW on Saturday. They have a special area roped off for the Deuces.......usually 125 plus ....and I do not have to walk thru the crud and the mud to look at JUNK......the 125 Deuces and the folks that drive them keep me busy for a day... :) and the swap meet.....

The " cool customs " at this show would not fill a small Waffle House parking lot....

The GOOD Tri 5's go to the Tri 5 shows in Pigeon Forge, the same goes for the good F-100s....they have a event in Pigeon Forge...recently moved to Knowville. Same for the 55 - 57 T-Birds. Even the Chevy trucks have a Pigeon Forge event....So what you have left is mostly POS....IMHO....

I vote for the cut-off date pre-1949. Actually my dream would be to have a pre-1937 show. The best looking Hot Rod cars were made from 1927-1936 and were Fords. Period.:p Hot Rods only...no customs...and no plastic cars... (did I just say that?)...yeah, I'm not a custom or plastic fan...never have been...INCOMING!!!...

I firmly believe that what you own....or want to own ... :) has a BIG influence on how you feel about this....
If you owned a 49 up ( X#$%^@#* ) , you can think it is a cool hot rod....even IF you have never been to Shades of the Past.... like some here posting ... AGE and finances also play a large part...Since this is a TRADITIONAL hot rod board......and no ads allowed past 1964 ......one would think that MOST would feel the same way....

If you have a 49 to 72 vehicle.........take it to the GoodGuys gig.....same with VW's, Corvairs and all that other stuff.......he will be glad to take your registration $$$ and tell you how cool that ( X#$%^@* ) is....

Early Times is one of the oldest car clubs in California.....and their cut off date was 1937....( now 1948 )....and the LA Roadsters is 1936. ... :)
For most ...it is the $$$......and the show promoters think letting the other stuff in will mean more $$$.....but in truth....it does not.

The largest car show in the USA is held in Louisville KY every year and it is a pre 49 event.... :)

The problem is, too many regional shows to choose from. There is a war going on in Wisconsin, Goodguys in Waukesha, and N.S.R.A. in Milwaukee. Something is going to have to give. How many guys are going to come from any distance and go to two shows 20 miles apart and one month apart? Both of these shows have high cut off years. The only way those years will be lowered, is if there are too many cars for the size of the parks. With the two shows that isn't going to happen any time soon.
Another problem has to do with the younger Hot Rodders boycotting the above shows because of the high cost of these shows. I guess I sort of agree with them, but I always go, figuring it seems like the best way to spend that amount of money on that weekend. I really like most of the hot rods these younger guys build and would like it if more of them would come, but I understand . :)

I second the Amen for Rudy!
I live about 30 minutes from the show and its just not for me anymore.
I know, I know "stay your *** at home then!"
Thats what I have been doing, I'm looking forward to doing some of the quoted events.
I met Rudy, HRLC, Ratster, Jalopy43 and more at a cool event that a guy had put on at a dragstrip nearby back in April in the FRIGGIN POURING down rain and yes I have a roadster truck with no top. I'm ******** ****A!:D
I had a blast! Great people, great cars and maybe some good cookies (HRLC) but I didn't get to eat mine (some kid asked me if that was a cookie I had in my hand.... well ya know what happened:) ).
I know some of you may say "well your cars are not Shades worthy"
    Hell, I don't care.
This is what I'm talking about and I think its what Rudys saying also.
Great times being had by all.
Rudy hit the nail on the head. So guys settle down and put your shirts back on. Its only a car show.Have fun guys. :D John

    I still want a cookie!:p

"My '30's car is a hot rod. Your '70's car is not."

    ****ing stupid.......

  27. Speaking of ****ing sounds-Shows like NSRA nats and Goodguys are simply ****ing;) in the missing profits they were letting slip away before the year of manufacture limit was raised.

I hate to say it but the newer cars they are letting in now are not the newest there WILL be.....Just Wait and see!- they will open it up, even further!

It will become a sort of rotating scale situation, where every year p***ing will allow the next newer model years admission.....ITS ONLY GOOD BUSSINESS YOU KNOW.....
As long as you all participate in these type events you are part of this problem.

The state of the economy has a part in this too- not everyone has the extra money as of late- that they did in the past,to spend going to them.
This will only be an increasing factor in the future and will escalate to the even newer years of vehicles that are eligible to attend these events.

No one said your 70's Torino is not ( or could not ) be a HotRod ..... :D

But it is NOT traditional.....and that's what this board is about.
I just don't think that Pigeon Forge is ready for a influx of Starsky and Hutch Torinos....

  29. for what it's worth...shades has ****ed for the last 5 yrs or so..I mean there are some cool rods, bu the truth is with the cut off yrs being raised just shows how much it has ****ed 'cause the $ ain't there.otherwise would they raise the yrs? personally I think a '58-62 cutoff would be fine but they need to move the show from the pasture to some where with better access...anyway they(those who put on the show) prob. don't give a **** what I think, but what do ya do..go to dixie fried?

Wow. I haven't heard this discussion for probably 3 or 4 years. Way back in the 1990's seems I heard it at every event I went to (mostly pre-49).

I guess I see both sides of it. Growing up in Street Rodding, there was a lot of the "You can't be my friend because your car is a 49 or newer..." mentality. But there's just not as much overlap in the mindsets of those who own pre-49s vs later cars.

Back then, even if you did have mixed shows, the Street Rodders would be in this part of the show, the tri-five guys would be over there, the Mustangs grouped in that spot, and the Chevy Muscle along that row, and Mopar muscle over there. And the customs/kustoms would hang out with street rodders since they were the only ones they could relate to.

But now it seems there's more intermingling and less segregation (intentional or not), and there's more people that have more than one cool old car... maybe a street rod and a 57 BelAir. When the NSRA had their first gig, a 40 Ford was barely over 30 years old... there's 30 year old Pintos now.... so even though I really don't care about Camaros, I do wonder if it's time for them to be in the "cool old cars" club?

As for Shades... it lost it's coolness w/ me a LONG time ago... think the last one I went to was in 96 or 97. The "holier than thou" street rodders were taking that at***ude too far for my taste, while the post -48 hotel parking lot were just being a buncha posers taking up all the cool spots thinking they belonged there (and thus fueling the aforementioned at***ude of the street rodders).
