Shades of the Past....what's wrong with these guys??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Deuce Roadster, Jan 10, 2006.

  1. I went to this event once a couple of years ago. I walked up one side of the strip and down the other, from one end of town to the other, and saw one flathead. I like homebuilt/owner built cars and I like flatheads and early OHV. For me it was like going to a Johnny Cash concert and having Garth Brooks open with a two hour set. Then Cash comes out, sings Ring of Fire and leaves.

I don't hate the event, in fact I hope they do well. It just isn't for me.
Ditto on Cruising the Coast, which I have attended many times because it is close.
In another post, I asked for suggestions on events to attend. I really would appreciate some input on this. I would like to attend three or four Real Hot Rod events this year and need to start planning now. Gulf South is best for me, but I can travel farther if need be.

It takes a big man...to say what you said....and determining a how a man is ....over the net is hard... :D

    We are cool......

For those here who do not know me......I have a real problem.....if it has wheels and goes fast..I like it.... :) ......for over 40 years I have been a car guy.....and the list of my past cars is long and varied. While for the last 10 years, I have sort of calmed down and just had 32's and 40's Fords.... I cannot afford all the stuff I like... ( common problem for most HAMBers I guess )..... I still like a bunch of other stuff...

The past vehicles list includes ( running... driving and insured......)

    48 Chevrolet pickup ( really a 51.....had to be a 48 ...NSRA you know  )
    48 Ford F-1 pickup.....same deal...really a 49
    55 Chevy Cameo ( big window )
    56 F-100 Big Window....actually 5 or 6 of these....
    a couple 55 Chevrolet cars
    a 56 Nomad
    a 57 Chevy Bel-Air Hardtop
    a 59 Chevrolet ( 1st car....got it in 1962 )
    a few real Z-28s ( 68, 69's )
    67 Chevelle 396 - 375 ( new )
    69 SS Nova 396-375 ( new )
    3 70 SS Chevelles...
    72 Pontiac Trans Am ( new in 72 )
    3 or 4 El Caminos.....

And that's just the stuff that ran....the project list is MUCH WORSE....
But the 49 Mersury coupe that I sold .....unfinished is the highlight ...and the largest regret of this list....

In 1981 ( the same year Shades of the Past Rod Run started )....I started a car show here in my town...along with help from fellow HAMBer A-Bomb...It was a open show. Anything with wheels, that run and had the registration fee was invited in. It became the largest car show in the state of South Carolina ( 450 to 500 cars ) ...at that time. This was a 1 day ....Sunday afternoon deal. We made lots of money and donated it to the local childrens home. Well over 100 grand in 10 years..and we stopped in 1993...so 100 grand was LARGE .... :D so I am anything but a elitist.....I like a lot of different vehicles...

The entire reason for the start of these thread was....

When the Shades started....it WAS a Rod Run....... pre 49 only.... and it was very sucessful.....and after more than 20 years.....as a PRE 49 event it raised the cut off date.....and the numbers have been falling ever since....

What's wrong with these guys ?? The idea of raising the cut off date is not working.....the vehicle count has dropped 700 vehicles. At 30 dollars a vehicle ( pre-registration fee ) that's 21 grand......

If MY business changed something and I then lost 21 grand revenue.....I D@^m well would change back.....wouldn't you ?

That's ALL I was trying to say......

I own 2 '68-70 Novas and enjoy them--but wouldn't walk across the street to look at one. Big generic m*** market shows are, oddly enough, for the m*** market!
The L.A. Roadster show is the perfect example of the nutcase show that I would enjoy--elderly cranks who don't allow anything except what they like!
Big difference, and both are enjoyable--including the whining by the excluded/whining by people who see cars they dislike.
It's the same difference as between watching network sitcoms and seeking out the esoteric culture you enjoy.
I just can't help the undeniable fact that the world has mysteriously been divided between early Fords and s****iron...

    Mr. Lancaster.........sir.....

You should go....to the LA Roadster show.
I have been a few times. Flew out from here in S.C. and it was fun BUT NOTHING like driving your own 32 Roadster thru the gates.....I did that too.....the trip out from S.C. was great too... Vegas in a 32 Roadster..

The Roadster show is One of the most fun times I EVER had.....with my clothes on..... :D

I've been going since 1974 when it was still in G'burg and haven't missed a year since but I've missed the last 5 of being actually registered at the show. If I am not mistaken this club is "PRIVATE" and being private makes me think that the original idea was to make more $ by upping the cutoff date. The numbers have dropped..the prices on everything from Lemonade to T-shirts have tripled and now its even pouring into the main drag with the "Rent-a Barney" lot cops telling you you can't park your car in the lot. Motel rooms that cost you 49.95 on Wednesday go up to 125.00 by Friday and Saturday. Luckily we and another couple rent a house for 75.00 a night thats 1/2 mile from the show. We walk to the grounds on Saturday for the swap meet and thats the only 10.00 they get from us.
I may be wrong but several years ago I think it was in Street Scene Magazine, that an ad was placed stating that they were taking "applications" for membership and if memory serves me it was this club. As I remeber, the dues were huge!
I also think they were first tied in with the "Grand Hotel" before having to go back out on their own when the "Grand" tried to take the run over.
One thing for sure...its always been about the MONEY and always will be about the MONEY when it comes to this show. You would think that with the numbers drop they would realize they had it better the way it was. Only good thing is that your chances are better at winning one of the cars they give away.
As I said we only go to the show on Saturday and spend the nights cruising or walking the streets looking at the parking lot cars.. its cooler, more interesting and a helluva lot cheaper!
If you want a run thats really for rodders try the Frog Follies...its all about cars and family and all proceeds go to St.Judes and the Easter Seals.
    Just my 48 cents worth!
