History Shaggy Dog Roadster found!

Or was it ever lost?
Either way... I was down in the Southern part of California this past weekend, and went to buy a '55 Chevy fender that was advertised on FBM. I got to the location and the guy walked out and informed me that we would be going over to the "Old Man's" place to see the fender. I think screening potential buyers for older people is a good thing... so, no problem! Once there, we walked back to look at the fenders, and a bunch of other junk. After some small talk, he realized my son and I were into cars, so he showed us around. I noticed a pretty cool Tall T coupe, so we went over there to check it out and to meet the older guy to pay for the fender. Eventually the screener friend said "show him the one in the garage!" And softly said "It was in some old movie, I forget what the name of it is." The older guy opened the door, and YOWZA! There sat the roadster from the 1959 Disney movie The Shaggy Dog! So I snapped a pic, he explained how he went through it all, and how someone from the Petersen or Disney wants to buy it and then threw out a huge number as to what he thought it was worth. I thanked him, checked out some other cool stuff that he had, and we split.
So, if you ever wondered what happened to the car... here it is!

Love that car, out of curiosity is the rumble seat just a straight seat sat in the trunk? We watched it a couple days before you posted it and I notice it was lacking any curve like a deck lid would have. Don’t think I’d ever seen a T with a rumble seat either.

I’ll have to see if I can find the photos of it with flames in another 50’s movie

I remember going to see it with some friends when it came out & being kids, we had no idea of starting times for the movie & we just sat down & started watching it from the middle or whatever. I remember that the dog in the car was the first thing I saw walking down the aisle to sit down. The car looks pretty darn intact. Wouldn't you love to know the history of how that car got from the movie set to the garage you where in. Amazing.

I remember Anette Funicello in the rumble seat. When I stuff the lawn chairs in the trunk of my T coupe, I wonder how did she fit in?

My wife's grandparents lived in Cherry Valley for 40+ years, moved there from Compton in the 60s. Ironically at about the same time my grandparents moved there from Hollydale to just around the block and they knew each other for 25 years before I met my wife back in the mid 80s. Anyway, when her grandpa could no longer pass the CA driving test for his license they decided to sell the cherry farm and move back to Utah where they were from to live out their lives. He should not have been driving but received a DL in the mail in Utah. WWII vet and lived to 101. The man they sold their farm to worked for Disney for decades and was a car guy. This car was one of the film cars he owned. We never got to meet him or see the cars but I just showed the pic to my wife and we both agree that the garage and aluminum siding outside look like the old farm. We could be way off on the pic, but it sure looks the same.

 

Did he get the dog too?

 

I’d throw a huge $$$$$$$ number on it to.. there only one Spin & Marty-Shaggy Dog roadster. If Disney or the Peterson want it ….make them pay…big time. There’s always Mecum and a reserve!

 

My friend told me the man who owned that car was a man with last name Schneider or snyder.He some property at the corner of Iowa and Center st in Highgrove(Riverside,Ca).He had a huge collection of Model T's.Before he passed away he sold one of the oldest Model t's in existance to Harrah's.My friend doesn't know what happened to the rest of the cars.

The cherry fam was located on High St in between Jonathon & Winesap in Beaumont/Cherry Valley. Last time we were there was probably a good 22/25 years ago, about the time the place was sold to the Disney guy.

 

I watched that movie when it came out, as a kid! Even then my eyes were on that “ old jalopy” ! I guess I have alway be a car nut….just didn’t know it back then! lol
