New member here! Does anybody know where in SoCal there is a shop that still shaves skinny white walls and makes them wide white walls? Closest place to LA or Ventura please.... T
Not quite your neighborhood, but Pacheco Tires in Fresno does them cheap. Off of Belmont and Maple. Hole in the wall place. Cash only.
Someone asked this question last week. I thought I posted this number, sorry I'm gettin old!! There's a tire shop in San Diego that does it. They charge 6 bucks a tire. My buddy just had it done. Looks great. They machine the sidewall down to the white. I don't remember the shop name but the number is 619-234-1271. Hope this helps ya
I'm sorry man, I thought I PM'd that number to ya. That's what happens when you have 100 things all going on at the same time!!
I drove down to Welch's Tire and Auto Center in San Diego, (619)234-1271 and just had my radial skinny whites shaved. They used a machine I could not identify and the operator didn't speak good enough english to really get it from him. It was completely covered in rubber dust and almost impossible to see who made it. Juan did tell me that they stopped making them years ago. Anyway, they did an outstanding job, only cost $17 a tire (and that was to remove from the car and rim) would only have been $10 if I would have brought just the tires. They even put that blue protective coating on the whites when there were done! I have photos if anyone wants to see.
Very cool! I'm glad that worked out. They only charged my friend 6 bucks because he brought the tires down dismounted. But it sounds like you still got a hell of a deal! Glad I could help.
Yes, close-ups. Not to be a dick but look here before a FNG get's their panties in a bunch: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44274
I have found an old timer here in Nebraska that will do it for 12.50 a tire. Does anyone know does it have to be a white wall tire, one guy told me it could be done with a white lettered tire as well.
Welch's Tire 3724 Main St., D'ago 619-234-1271 They do the whitewall buffing for like $25 a tire (mounted)
If you can't find anyone to do it, check this out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkcm3rh60p0 I've never done it, but looks easy enough I guess.
I've done it! It's easy..and messy! Sometimes the white rubber strip is not exactly uniform, but the narrow white wall tires I used were on the car and new! But I wanted wide whites, so instead of $700 or more I got my white walls for the price of an 80 grit flapper disc from HD and some 120 I already had for my DA.. I'll get pics tonight!
I worked for a Dealer Years ago in Wisconsin, There was a mobile guy who always came in to fix tire blems on sides. he did that right on the car. But.... he was limited to how wide he could widen it. There is only so much white on some sidewalls under the black.
That looks great. What brand did you start with? How long did it take you? Are you using an angle grinder, or a DA sander? I have some junky 13-inch tires I’ve been thinking about trying this with. -Dave
