My 54 Chevy pickup project is in hibernation so I am relegated to research. I will need a shifter for this trans, but am not inclined to buy an expensive guaranteed-to-fit unit. Research on this page reveals that rods, levers, and adjusting ****ons are available, and that modifications are doable. My question is how significant are the differences a**** the several 4 speed shifters offered for sale? Most are identified as being for a specific make, model, and year, but I ***ume that pertains primarily to the mounting and rods. I would like to think I could buy any Compe***ion Plus shifter, and fab the mount and rods. That said, do certain shifter models have machined detents or stops that would sabotage my hopes?
Never seen a shifter for a manual that has any detent’s. There are adjustable stops so not to over travel the throw as found on Hurst models.
Here's a picture of the one I had that came out of GM van; at least it can get you started on orientation.
Brewers performance is the 833 guru, here's a page with a factory hurst comp mount or two. Shoping around the other pages of 4 speed parts under shifters and linkage, there are new, billet mounts, reconditioned factory mounts as well as bare shifters, handles all lengths etc. The diamond shaped aluminum plate is the adapter from a hurst to the 833 tailshaft and you'll need to find out which one you have to determine where it bolts to- i think i also has rods, but places like speedway sell cheap kits that are just cut to length rods and rodends, etc. He's got rebuilt shifters $170-200 for a hurst comp You dont need to worry about what ch***is anything is for, since you're bolting everything to the trans. The mount plate goes to your 3 bolt pattern on the tail and the hurst comp goes to that plate, you can build whatever rods are needed to hit your shift levers (levers also available from Brewers). I'm not sure if the ****py old Inland shifter Mopar used before returning to Hurst requires that mounting plate or goes straight to the tailshaft.
