Can someone help me with a 4-speed Muncie shifter? I know that is a stupid question, of course someone here can help! I just recently got a M-22 date stamped 1970 and want to put it into my '51 Chevy. The Muncie 3-speed and column shift works great for discouraging the wife from wanting to drive the car, but is terribly inefficient for speed-shifting the 327 c.i. mill. The 2 part question is: do I have to buy a 4-speed shifter made for Muncie or will other 4-speed shifters work assuming I want to bolt and go? If I scrounge boneyards and or swapmeets, is there an easy way to identify all needed components for said shifter.
4 speed shifters have 3 arms, linkage can always be made, depending how clever you are. all the hurst shifters are still available b & m now owns the hurst name and still makes all the shifters and linkage sets
Hurst sells their shifters as two parts, there is the shifter, and then there is the installation kit. So you can use most any shifter, but you need the right installation kit (includes the linkage and the mounting bracket) It's not easy to identify the one you need...they all look the same, mostly. If you take it off a Muncie transmission, it's likely to fit.
You may want to take a look at the Hurst catalog, and go from there: http://hurst-shifters.com/hurst-products/Chevrolet_2 The shifter itself is the same for the various transmissions (Muncie, T-10, Super T-10, Saginaw), but some applications, particularly the older ones (like say 55-57 Chevy) don't have the bolt-on style stick that can be changed easily. As long as you have an idea what stick design you need for your application, you can find one that will work. Just be sure to get the right linkage kit for your transmission. At a swap meet, you'd pretty much need copies of the installation instructions (available online) to be sure you're getting the right one, unless of course its in the original box or attached to a Muncie.
The way I understand it, the Hurst shifter mounts to the tranny and works better. Muncie shifters for M22/M21 mounted to a crossmember and had a reputation for binding linkages, missing shifts, and sometimes blowing engines.
As squirrel said! The Hurst install kit will fit both Muncie and BW T10 [ & S-T10 ] The shifter will be on the L/H side of the tunnel. If you want the shift lever closer to the center use a Hurst install kit for a 63-82 Corvette
That's a terrible transmission, just awful. Do yourself a favor and do not, whatever you do, put that thing into your car. As a matter of fact, I'll help you out. If you will ship it to me I'll make sure it's properly disposed of, free of charge!
Got a Hurst 4-speed Super shifter with the push down for reverse with original scripted ball for $100 if interested pm me will ship.
