My chromer polished these 97s for me, I wanted them chromed but he liked the polished look. He is offering to chrome them in the future if they don't hold up but that is a lot of work for me to tear them down to say nothing about the down time on my roadster.

Will it last? I keep things clean and polished, Will I be pleased with this finish or should I just plate them now.

If he just polished the zinc body, it will tarnish in time. How long til it gets bad, hard to say. Think of a zinc plated bolt exposed to elements.

Airlock on your garage door, temperature and humidity-controlled shop and never take them out into the elements. They'll be just fine in there ;). An added benefit is that you'll never have to wash or dust your car again :).

OK, I am gathering a consensus here, sounds like I am chroming them now.

Okay, good comparison. but a zinc coated bolt is not polished. So if it takes the bolt to tarnish over 5 years say, could I take a stab at the polish job lasting 10? Maybe 15 years with periodical maintenance? I'm 62, by the time I am 87...fuck them...right?

Well here is one possibility that might work: clearcoat them with Urethane or a clear epoxy?

By the time you reach 87, you and the roadster will have lots of "PATINA", but it will be out of style, and you'll have to start over again ;)

one bit of salty spray and the corrosion will start. Even just water sttting on them will cause marks.

  11. What do you mean " a lot of time to dis-assemble the carburetors". If you can't carefully dis-assemble all 3 carburetors in less than 1 hour total. you are doing something wrong. Make arrangement with your plating outfit to fit their schedule. That way you may be able to get a 1, or 2 day turnaround, so you have the least amount of lost time. You show the carburetor bodies with your question. Why didn't you ask the question before re-assembling the carburetors?

    powder coat?
I recently had some Edelbrock heads powder-coated, as I've gotten tired of cleaning "oxidized" aluminum!
    * I've not installed these; the next "care-taker" can or_ (not).

He's probably not going to be driving the car during a winter snowstorm...

Ahh, Stu, I think the salt spray Torana is referring to is from the ocean. He lives on an island and messes about with sailboats. Doubt he ever sees snow.

    I can’t argue with that.

thinking more about it, prolly would be comparable to polished aluminum. Worth a shot, worst case, you start over.

Besides, by then, the earths' supply of chrome polish will have been depleted!

I don’t know how well it works but Zoop’s make a coating for polished aluminum that is supposed to maintain the shine.

  26. That pot metal will tarnish withing a couple months. I had to have 6 WWs chrome plated for my Mysterion reproduction. Found a mail order place in Indiana that did a super job and was much cheaper than everyone else. Did all 6 for about $1,200.

Billy, as has been said already they won't stay shiny for very long, maybe a couple of months in this climate.

Clive is actually removing them from the catalog. TGhey can't get a good finish on them over there. That is why he sent me these to have my plate shop do them instead.

And not far from my office. I do my part to keep them in business.

    Beautiful

I have come to the same conclusion after reading these posts. I am going to drop them back off today with Chrome Tony.

Not sure I follow, they aren't assembled, the tops are just on them.

Well, not planning on it anytime soon.

You all were great help, thank you. Back to the chrome shop.

My take is that you wanted them chromed, and you will never be truly happy with them until they are chrome. So, just do it now.
