Technical Shipping a used gas tank

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 51504bat, Jan 27, 2023.

  1. This right here .

I have seen guys use exhaust from a running car to weld gas tanks . The welder we use now will not weld a gas or oil tank unless we drain it and fill it with water .

the chances of something happening are slim . But if that something happens , wether your tank did it or not your fubar !!

don’t risk it unless buddy is willing to pay $1,000,000 for your risk .

Find out if you can and how and charge accordingly for your time .

Stunned was I when DHL delivered a tank to me from a Texas junkyard.
The box it was in was too way large, and crumpled. It stank ? stunk of raw fumes.
The driver said what is this? My truck is full of fumes.
We both shook our heads as I told him.

  3. A buddy of mine shipped a 1934 Ford truck gas tank to the east coast from southern California. He washed it out, and then bought a couple of pounds of ground coffee to put inside to hide any possible smell. It worked for him.

Dry ice will de-fume a gas tank

Checking with FedEx on Monday to see what they say. Best to go to the source.

  6. The only issue with this is if it is not labeled correctly and anything happens either in shipment or at the warehouse , regardless if the tank is at fault or not EVERYONE involved will be looking to point fingers at someone to blame .

and if anything shady has been done your screwed !

seen it way to many times at my customers ( I do forklift and Heavy equipment mechanics)

man accident happens , last one was a dock plate collapsing and forklift falling out of the building . No major injuries except some “ whiplash “ for lack of a better term .
Once the government and related companies did there inspections there where multiple violations from forklifts not safe , fire extinguishers out of date , ventilation no up to code , shelving violations etc etc etc .
This customer tried to push the forklift violations off on us as we are “ their service provider” and are tasked with keeping them safe and within regulation .

what saved us was the tech on site was the mechanic on site has his forklift mechanic license and was an ex army mechanic working on airplanes .

once he showed his credentials I think more so his military stuff the customer stood down n took responsibility.

Trust me when I say yes we are living in a nanny state and everyone is looking to point blame when shit goes south .

    is it worth it ?

    Rant over .
