I have a large box of engine parts that I have to ship to Australia, too large for the post office. FedEx is up the road but are there other carriers you have used that get things there safely? I know about the ban on wood so I'm, using plastic wood for protective framework. Thanks! Bob
The guys from Australia probably need to chime in on this one. Anything that heavy will probably be in for a boat ride. Just wondering, would it fit in one of those heavy duty foot locker style plastic boxes like Costco or Home Depot or Lowes sells? They seal up good, are reasonably easy to handle and with an extra hand full of zip ties on top of the contents can be pretty secure and easy for customs or other inspectors to re-secure. I just retired from TSA and saw lots of those hauling stuff to Alaska and overseas. Not the cheapest way but secure and easy for people to handle along the way unless you are shipping a complete engine block and all.
Not sure about Australia but I shipped 5 wire wheels UPS to Africa. Let me tell you, he paid dearly in shipping cost to get them!
I've got a friend in Tasmania (Australia) and have been shipping him parts for a couple of years now. I have a box ready to go which is 32"x11"x8" and weighs 52#. Shipping via Priority Mail International is $307.40, which is much cheaper that Fed-Ex or UPS. Priority Mail usually gets my shipments to Tasmania in 10-days or less.
Get the Aussie customer to find an Aussie shipping company with an agent based in USA [they get cars shipped there all the time] These shipping companies will do parts consignments. You just send the parts to them. I've used "Kiwi Shipping" to bring a transmission to New Zealand [it was added into a friends parts consignment] This method is sometimes a bit slower, while they bundle consignments together. But you always get them [not like the "Fed Ex -UPS Russian Roulette Game"]
I've shipped Engine Heads, Manifold, etc. to Australia and New Zealand no problem through the Post Office. UPS and FedEx are a pain in the ****! Break up the parts in several boxes, instead of one huge/heavy box.
Sorry to dig up such an old thread but what about going the other direction? There is an engine (inline six) in Australia that I want to get shipped to either Seattle or Tacoma freight dock/port. What or who should we go through?
You could see if Al Montana at Montana Exports has any ideas. I have had stuff sent from the U.S. to here. You may get some better info here if you mention the city / location you are trying to get it from.
