I found a bed for my F100 in Nevada. The price was right I called Fed Ex got a decent shipping quote and everything was going fine til today. Apparently the Fed Ex driver refused to pick up the bed since it wasn't crated even though I clearly stated to Fed Ex the bed would be palletized and ready for shipment without a crate. So now I'm left to find another shipping company. I called ups but was quoted $3k to ship versus the $415.00 from Fed Ex. Can anyone recommend a good shipping company? BTW: Fed Ex already billed my credit card......
Need more details. Weight? Location (business? Loading dock?) Any way for origin to put it into a semi truck, and for you to pick it up from a loading dock? Also try http://www.u-ship.com
Did FedEx ask whether or not they could stack items on the bed? That would probably be why he wanted it crated.
The bed is currently strapped on a pallet ready to be load via forklift onto the Fed Ex truck at the shippers business ( Antique Car Parts) The delivery location is my shop with a loading dock and pallet jack. The weight is 350lb 78x72x36 Cl*** 150. Zip code 89048 to 06040. I have shipped items like this before and have never had a driver refuse the pick-up
Matt, I just used Uship to get a camper shell 800 miles. Transport companies bid on your item to ship. You can also place a target price that you are willing to pay. Worked for me. Bob
I signed up for uship. So far I have had one bid that was well over my spending limit. We will see what happens. I spoke with someone from the Fed Ex Ship Center in Vegas last night and we may have worked the issue out. I'm waiting to call the seller. It appears he may have just put the bed on top of two pallets stacked. Obvisoulsy, any driver isnt gonna be comfortable with that. The last time I shipped a bed I placed to pallets together and set the bed on 4x4s. Wrapped the whole thing in shrink wrap and away it went.
Call the corporate offices and pitch a *****. If they quoted you palletized the driver has no right to refuse. You do have something in writing, correct? Where the problem lies is that they don't want to be liable for it once the monkeys from the Samsonite comercial get hold of it. You may try calling the hub that the driver is out of and make some sort of deal with them to pick it up seeing as how it was quoted the way that it is on a pallet not in a box.
Thats what I did last night whoever it doesnt sound like the shipper did a great job with the palletizing. Im waiting to speak with him today.
If it is on 2 SEPERATE pallets the pallets need to be joined together. Three 2x4s slid thru the 2 pallets and screwed or nailed to the pallets will make it moveable. I ship a lot of freight and we often join 2 pallets together to get the length we need without buying a custom pallet. The driver is protecting the compasny from a damage claim. I was at a freight terminal and saw a wide format printer(about 6 ft long) on 2 pallets one on each end with only the machine connecting the 2 pallets. That damage claim would never be paid. Nick
No, if you chose Freight, or Fed Red to us FedEx Express employees, they are an LTL (Less Than TruckLoad) shipper. They will not stack things on the trailer unless the unit is meant for it. Try the UShip.com, you can find an independent shipper to run it, like on that show "Shipping Wars". Good luck man..
Thats how I typically ship a big item. The seller stacked 2 pallets on top of each other and thats what the problem was. I just got off the phone with him and he agreed to use the prefered method. I'll be touching base with Fed Ex on Monday otherwise Ill be using a bidding shipper of uship.com
He is in Puhrump I believe its about 50 miles from Vegas. If that is something you can do I can compensate you
Find a plastic molder or similar industry that gets stuff in big heavy cardboard....maybe a referigerator box. The stuff needs to be INSIDE the perimeter of the pallet since they bump pallets together when loading. Lots of stuff ships with cardboard box attached to a pallet.
UPDATE: I spoke with the shipper over the weekend about the Fed Ex's expectations of packaging. I thought we were all on the same page..... Fed Ex came to pick up the bed yesterday and the driver refused to take it again... stating that the bed needed to be wrapped in card board. I figured at this point I was just gonna let it go... about a half hour later I got a call from the dispatcher in South Vegas who informed me they were sending a truck out to pick it up and they would repackage it to their liking. Apparently, there are a few car guys working at Fed Ex and South Vegas. So the bed is on its way to me. I appreciate everyone's input and help.
An update to the update..... the bed arrived Tuesday at my shop...unfortunately heavily damaged. The pristine fenders are crushed and the rear panels has been crushed. I'm currently awaiting Fed Ex to send an inspector to the view the damage. Thankfully I have before and after pictures.
