Hey guys, I would like to have a talk about shocks, specificlly what you use on the back of your Deuce. We have used P&J in the past but was told there are better shocks out there. So what are they? are they gas filled? most shock companies have done away with standard hydralic shocks. Do you have part numbers?? The car in consideration is a fully fendered five window, we are building the chassis now and won't have it for testing...so trial and error are out. Thanks in advance, Matt
We use to use the P&J as well but fell into a problem on the front of a 34 where we needed more height amd wanted a covered shock, after getting tech specs as far as the travel we needed we found shocks made by KYB, they were a long covered shock, we filled the stampings and had them chrome plated, as far as ride it goes down the road great and has no problems handle crummy roads. I'm pretty sure I called there tech support when I had the measurments need to get one that would allow for ample compression and rebound height.
Don't use gas filled shocks on a hot rod. With the pressure exerted by the gas they are just too stiff even if you use an application with a light rearend weight (S-10 PU for example). The shock that's been used for ages is the '63 -67 corvette rear shock and in my opinion it's a good one. The majority of "hot rod" shocks sold over the last 20 years is this shock repackaged with private label part numbers. Maybe somone else has some current experience to overshadow this but at least it's a good starting point. Might want to call Monroe and ask if there is a more modern shock that is comparable to the 'vette. Again, stay away from gas filled if your kidneys are of any value to you (think hard tail motorcycle) Frank
I have Aladdin coil overs on the rear of my hiboy. I think it rides and handles pretty good for a straight axel hot rod. There isn't much suspension travel and with that considered it takes the bumps pretty good, better than a softail Harley for sure!
