I'm converting the manual shifter lever to shift my 700R4.

What have you guys used for a shift indicator?

Could a 1951 Fordomatic indicator be adapted?

    Thanks,
    Rich

  2. Using a stick shift unit to any Automatic is not a good idea. Motor torque can ans will shift for you. That's trouble on the way. In my 51 Vick I used the stock Auto unit to my 700-R-4. It was NOT an easy task but I got Park in Park, Nuteral in Nuteral and first gear in Low on the Crown. It also has the shift detent's (hand filed after welding up stock 2 position unit) to keep it from jumping gears and a start saftey switch as it should. Go the extra mile, you will be glad you did.

  3. The main problem will be the early Ford autos only had two detents on the shifter for forward gears; low and drive. In '58 Ford added a third detent on some models (low, drive 1, drive 2) that may be better suited. In either case installing the automatic column will be easier than modifying the manual one....

  4. Here are 2 shots. Stock 51 to 700-R. Yes it works properly in all gears. It was real important to me to look stock with the Hood closed, as it should.

I have the Limeworks unit hooked to my stock column and 200r4. Works great and looks very nice. I don't have an indicator though.

  11. That is a good looking unit. I wouldn't have any issues using it in mine.

Wow too cool . It's a shame we don't have an original shoebox column shifter as we would have gone this way instead of a lokar floor shift. Maybe we need to track down a shoebox column shifter. Any leads??

You only need a shoebox column. You are buying the shifter to put on it. The old one comes off and this one goes on. :)

  17. So it looks to me like there unit is only for Stick Shift column's. My factory 51 and up Ford automatic unit does not have an exposed shift tube. In fact I don't know that 49-50 has one either.

Thanks for the Endorsement on our shifter , we are selling quite a few with good reviews , just follow the directions & it's an easy set up, we have it to fit 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 columns or retro for Ford & Chevy stock columns with a 3 on the tree style shifter already on your column. Ad over :)

I used an auto column from a 6? falcon that a friend gave me. Took a little to get it to work but it looks good and I have an integrated turn signal switch. Sorry bad pictures, they are all I have with me. Just another option.
