Trying to decide if I will need to change the rearend in my '49 - I will be running a SBC/auto. I know that the Maverick is the rear of choice but they seem difficult to find around here - are there any other rears that fit well? Do I even need to change or will the stock one be okay? Thanks-
Mid to late 60's Mustang, cougar, fairlane. They are a bolt in. I think Granada will work too. The stock rear may work, but are a little weak. Depends on how big your rite foot is.
i used the mavrick, but i know theres others that fit. far as ive ben told anything over like 130 hspwr will grenade the stock rear tim
The 49 was the weakest of the shoebox rears, bad axles in that case. Find a 51 automatic rear and dont beat it and it will last. OTOH ratios are still kind of poor for highway so a 8" is probably the better choice. The main thing to be careful of is wheel clearance, especially lowered, there aint much room for error or wide rubber.
I have a 1968 Mustang 8 inch in my 1954 Ford Sedan. It is more narrow than the stock one, which may or may not be similar to what you have in your Shoebox.
look at the two wheel drive s-10's, if you do not mind a gm rea. easy to find and cheap! i think that is what bass has in his shoebox.
IF YOU CAN FIND AN 8" OUT OF A MID 60S FORD LIKE A COMIT CALIENTE THE SPRING HANGERS ARE IN THE EXACT LOCATION
those stock shoebox rears are way tougher than you would think...50ford on here runs one and i run one in my t.he runs a 351 that he has mild built but is pretty badass and he romps on it..and drives it daily..your u joints will go before those rear ends do.
