Hey fellas, my shoebox's steering is pretty loose right now, so I'm trying to decide what I should start changing first to tighten her up. I'm sure the bushings are all shot, so which ones should I start with? Also, is there a way to tighten up the steering box or rebuild it? Perhaps there is another aftermarket box that will bolt up to it.... Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Shawn
Please please please use the search function. I've been doing lots of research before diving in and its all there. Go to advanced search, type in steering+shoebox. LOTS of info to be had.
give fat man fabrications a call they got the tie rod kit and bracket for a volvo box, I just did this conversion on a 51 and worked great.
Get a kanters kit and do all the bushings. Rebuilt box is around 475 if you can get one. Try adjusting yours first according to the green bible, and if you don't have one get one. you can swap it for a volvo box with needle bearings thats *almost* like power steering for around what it'd cost to have the stocker rebuilt Supposedly they turn fine without tons of play or hard turning when rebuilt/adjusted, but I guess I'd have to see it to believe it.
Cool, thanks. I checked out some tech articles here about it. I'm gonna adjust my box to get some play out of the wheel, then replace the bushings and seals to see if that helps. I really don't wanna spend a bunch of $$, but then again I wanna make sure its safe to drive at 70. Thanks for all the advice fellas.
