I just picked up a barn fresh 51 Ford 4 door, sitting since '84. The motor is stuck and apart.. I'm planning a super low budget swap. I have a 283 out of a '64 Chevy II. My question is what clutch set up do I need for the sbc bell housing/ offy adapter to stock trans. My neighbor has the same swap in his 50 but can't remember the clutch setup. I appreciate any incite. Also I have the flattie if anyone needs parts.
I would think a stock Chevy pressure plate with a clutch disc of the same diameter but with a center spline the same as the Ford transmission.........in other words, a Ford disc. Ray
^^^ that is what I would do, just go to the NAPA store or the like and say I need a clutch disc for my chevy with this spline. Done deal.
Okay I'll give it a shot. I had heard rumor that a '50 merc pressure plate was needed due to the throw out bearing diameter?
oops......forgot about the T/O brg. It depends on the diameter of the tube on which the T/O brg rides. If, by chance, the Chevy and Ford are the same, then it should be possible to use the Chevy T/O brg. If not the same diameter....there may be a Ford T/O brg assembly that is compatible with the Chevy T/o fork. Sorry for all the speculation...and not more hard facts.....but at least you have some alternatives to consider. Ray
