    For late model stuff: a good scanner like a Gennisis or Snap-On Modas (don't know if I spelled that right, but either can also be used as ociliscope to watch injector wave forms, sensor signals, ect...) with all the program cards and adapters for OBD1 and OBD2, several quality DVOMs (multi-meters) with different leads and inductive amp probes, test lights, short finders, fuel pressure gauges, Charging/Starting system tester like a VAT40 or VAT45, and a subscription to an online shop manual like All-Data
