I need to switch from a long water pump to a short water pump on my SBC. I need to switch my pulleys and I see different sizes available, was wondering on how to determine with size to go to? Any ideas and why?
What works with the alternator you have? Usually it’s the balancer pulley and alt pulley that determines the water pump...
I'd check here for short pump accessory brackets and pulleys: http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/ Hope this helps. Phil
Not to many used parts places left in my neck of the woods, the state closed alot of them down. So, looking for new parts but have found 3-4 different sizes, and I am wondering what the OEM size was.
Which size crank pulley are you going to use. I think they are 6 3/4 or 8 inch? That pulley matches the damper diameter. Phil
I just put Speedway's chrome pulleys on my '55 Chevy. It was a long pump setup. When I got it, it had a little Holley street blower that I didn't want so I needed all new pulleys. They fit great and didn't break the bank. SPark
Bought the pulleys for Alan Grove for a couple projects; good quality parts and they don't wobble like the Chinese pulleys.
Maybe it is just me; but I always like to use the smaller crank pulley and matching pump pulley; kinda like was used pre '67 or so stock set ups. Think it looks better for some reason.
Summit has them under their Chevrolet Performance parts. They specify long and short applications and which one matches. That’s how I got mine, short pump Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Lee and Rich If interested in oem GM pulleys these are the ones for the 327 in my 67 Nova. Pay no mind to the extra wp pulley holes as I'm using a GM aluminum pump that comes with both small and large bolt circle. Hope this makes sense. Hard to line up tape in photo but water pump pulley is 71/8" dia.
There are two SBC “short” water pumps. The pump shaft diameter is different. Be sure to check the pulley for that, too. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Going with the standard 5/8" shaft, do these measurements sound right " 7.3" crank with 6.75 ps add on. And 6 3/8" water pump pulleys. On a 8" balancer
Yes My GM aluminum pump has the larger 3/4" shaft along with the dual bolt pattern. I machined the water pump pulley bore from 5/8" and added the other bolt pattern, now I can use either combination if I make a pump change. I believe most parts store replacement pumps are standard with dual bolt patterns in either shaft diameter. I also had to open up the bore in my early fan spacer but I have a spare stock spacer.
I have 2 short water pump SBCs. A 60's 327 with a small damper and GM pulleys and a newer 305 with a large damper and chrome Speedway pulleys. I've had to nudge the water pump pulley flange on a little farther on both engines to get the pulleys to line up. Is this normal? Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread. Gary
My power steering uses the outer crank pulley, the water pump and alternator are driven off the standard inner pulley that bolts directly to the harmonic balancer, no need for an extra pulley I guess it depends on the type of power steering pump and mount/adjuster being used as well as the alternator mount and adjuster, it has to be a symphony for all to line up correctly.
This is correct [I learned from experience]. The difference lies in whether the engine had a generator or an alternator. Most aftermaket short SBC short waterpumps available are for OEM Alternator engines so the pulley flange is further out.[eg C3 Corvette] We just pulled the cover off the back of the pump and Carefully pressed the flange to the correct distance My car has a generator SBC engine
Check. I also have the oem power steering pump mount that must be used on the hi-perf small blocks with the 8 inch balancer, plain steel, I believe they are being reproduced. Edit If that style is what you need, Cl***ic Industries has them. https://www.cl***icindustries.com/product/e278.html
Almost every replacement sbc water pump I have bought in the last few years did not align correctly ...Some have been off by 3/16". I end up having to press the hub down just like Mimilan says. Not much fun tossing off belts at high RPM due to bad alignment.
I took a couple water pump pulleys off, way way back, that had a shim/spacer behind the pulley. Must have been a factory belt alignment item. That was almost 40 years ago, wonder if I kept one?
For years people (including myself) thought those were water pump pulley "spacers". In actuality GM intended those to be a reinforcement due to pulleys cracking over time.
My short pump has a shim behind the aftermarket pulley. Hard to install until I siliconed the shim inside the pulley. Phil
DDDenny, thanks for the info on the reinforcement spacer. My mother always told me, I should learn something new everyday, and I just did.
