A short Ute. This Hot rod was won in a raffle some years ago. The raffle's winner still owns and maintains the vehicle meticulously:

Back about '72 or so (???), I had the chance to buy a '61 or '62 big Ford S/W that had the rear door removed shortened way up.

I look back and wished I woulda bought it b/c it had a 410" Trip equipped FE motor in it along w/ a top-loader and 9" rearend!!

    I'm talking like for $200..................................

I stand corrected. I was looking at the area behind the "B" pillar to rear wheel and forgot about the longer door. My error. :)

Roofline has been shortened (and lowered), from that of the 4 door sedan on which vehicle is based, to achieve the result.
I guess we agree to disagree on "shortened" in this case. :)

I had a friend in Jersey part out a '73 Electra Estate wagon that I paid $25 for and when he told me that the posi rear had leaf springs I didn't believe him until I saw it for myself. You're more accurate than you thought.

In the late 1960's Chrysler Australia Ltd. used a shortened VF Valiant Ute as a test car for its proposed Chrysler Valiant Charger.

This is a regular length VF/VG Valiant ute, for comparison:

Initially a VF Valiant ute was shortened by removing a section behind the cabin and a second section behind the rear wheels. This gave a wheelbase equivalent to the proposed Valiant Charger. Weight was added to the tray to achieve the weight of the proposed coupe.

A second VG Valiant Ute was given similar treatment. (Both Utes are currently owned by the same person and are being restored).

Well respected race driver Leo Geoghegan (Australian) provided input.

Various motor, gearbox, differential, brakes, fuel tanks, etc were tested. A Chrysler win at Bathurst was just one of the reasons.

Here is a photo showing a short Ute with the "new" Valiant Charger and AT4 Dodge truck. (Torana refers to the opposition - the Holden Torana. The other opposition was the Ford Falcon GT.):

I saw this at a show in Newton, KS last year... kinda neat, but I agree that vans and VW busses look the best.

  18. There are two of these shortened cars riding around my neighborhood. One's a 57 Chevy, the other a 64 Impala. I cringe every time I see that Impala

  19. Now that's funny. My dad had a '76. I probably crawled under it a time or two, It's been so long tho. I suppose the clam shell tail gate/glass set up was particularly heavy and made springs necessary. I thing Big Cadillac Fleetwoods,
Limos and Hearse of than era were using leaf springs to, someone with experience can correct my facts...
